As a seasoned gamer and horror enthusiast with a soft spot for quirky hosts, I can’t help but feel a thrill of anticipation as I hear about Shudder’s upcoming event, The Last Drive-In: Nightmareathon. It’s been six long years since Joe Bob Briggs graced our screens with his witty commentary and encyclopedic knowledge of all things horror. And what better way to celebrate this anniversary than a 24-hour marathon of six killer movies?
2018 saw horror host Joe Bob Briggs come back to say goodbye with a 24-hour marathon, “The Last Drive-In”, but due to overwhelming fan response, it became more than just a farewell event. Since then, fans have enjoyed multiple specials and six seasons of “The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs”. To celebrate the sixth anniversary of this epic marathon and six years of fantastic content, Shudder is hosting another 6-movie marathon titled “The Last Drive-In: Nightmareathon”, set to air on August 30th at 9 p.m. ET on Shudder TV.
According to a recent announcement, “Shudder is hosting a special event called The Last Drive-In: Nightmareathon, marking the culmination of the sixth season of The Last Drive-In, which premiered earlier this year. This special event will air on Shudder TV and AMC+ TV feeds on Friday, August 30th at 9 p.m. ET, and it will be available on demand on both platforms starting Sunday, September 1st.”
“Joe Bob Briggs, Darcy the Mail Girl, and some unexpected visitors will keep the night alive as they throw a wild party reminiscent of jungle animals for The Last Drive-In: Nightmareathon – an all-night marathon event honoring six years and six seasons with six terrifying movies, following the devil’s plan.”
On “The Last Drive-In,” the renowned drive-in movie critic, Briggs, presents an array of unique horror films. He discusses their qualities, backgrounds, and impact on genre cinema. Viewers can catch fresh episodes from Season 6 every other Friday evening on Shudder and AMC+. The grand finale for season six, “The Last Drive-In: Nightmareathon,” will be a one-of-a-kind event, featuring a six-movie marathon, orchestrated only by the talented team behind “The Last Drive-In.”

In line with the custom of “The Last Drive-In“, the films to be screened during the marathon won’t be revealed beforehand. One of Briggs’ intentions for the series is to share lesser-known movies with viewers, as the host has often discussed the thrill and hurdles associated with surprising longtime fans.
Back in October 2023, Briggs shared with ComicBook that Ingmar Bergman’s “Cries and Whispers” was screened at drive-ins during the ’70s, indicating a wide range of content suitable for drive-ins and horror movies. However, when complaints arise, it’s typically because viewers are seeking the style of ’80s slasher films and prefer not to deviate too much from that formula. Briggs doesn’t mean to stereotype them all as stoners, but many watch under the influence and may struggle with following the deeper, more complex narratives we explore in our movies. Many viewers consume substances during the show, which could potentially cause them to lose interest or grasp the intricacies of the second movie.
