The makers behind the TV adaptation of “The Last of Us” have explained and justified Kaitlyn Dever’s selection for the role of Abby in season 2, stating that her on-screen portrayal will present significant variations from the original game version of the character.
Initially, Beanie Feldstein from Booksmart was thought to play the character Ellie (later portrayed by Bella Ramsey), but now she is poised to enter the cast in season 2, as her character, Abby, gets ready to stir up trouble.
To address potential criticism from fans regarding Dever portraying Abby, Neil Druckmann emphasized: “We prioritize acting abilities above all else.
We are seeking an individual who can truly embody the spirit of these characters… What matters most isn’t a physical resemblance to every detail such as eyebrows, nose, or body shape. Instead, we value authentic portrayal and capturing the essence of each character.
“It’s not nowhere on the priority list, but it’s below a bunch of other things that we consider.”

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he remarked, “It was challenging to find a talent as fitting for the part as Kaitlyn.
In our game, we wanted Ellie to appear less imposing and move gracefully, whereas Abby should embody a physical strength reminiscent of Joel, making her capable of handling objects forcefully.
In this adaptation, violence isn’t as prevalent or frequent, so the focus shifts more towards the dramatic aspects rather than constant action scenes.
I’m not denying that something might be happening, but my focus or methodology regarding this matter is distinct from yours due to differing priorities.
Craig Mazin further explained that casting Dever enriches the narrative by providing insights into Abby’s strong personality, as well as exploring how her physical weakness compared to Ellie could impact her character.
In April, we can expect the second season of “The Last of Us” to hit our screens, delving into the storyline presented in the game’s Part 2.
Additionally, Pedro Pascal (Joel), Ramsey, and Dever will be joined by other notable actors such as Isabela Merced portraying Dina, Catherine O’Hara assuming a role of an enigmatic character not present in the games, and Young Mazino depicting Jesse.
Additionally, we anticipate the return of actors such as Gabriel Luna (as Tommy) and Rutina Wesley (in her role as Maria).
