The Last of Us Director Works on Each Project Like it Could be His Last One

As “The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered” prepares to launch for PC, the series is poised to attract a fresh group of enthusiasts. However, the creative director Neil Druckmann has expressed doubts about whether a third installment in the franchise will ever be produced. In an interview with Etalk, Druckmann discussed his approach to each project as if it could be his last.

He stated that for each game he creates or project he handles, he approaches it as if it’s his final chance,” he said. “Consequently, he gives it his all and leaves no stone unturned.

In his words, when we created the initial “The Last of Us”, that’s how I approached it. I wasn’t certain if I’d be able to make a sequel, so it needed a conclusive ending. Similarly, while working on “Uncharted 4”, my mindset was the same. When developing “The Last of Us Part II”, I felt unsure if I’d ever have another chance to do so; hence, it also had a definitive conclusion.

Druckmann elaborates on his preferred approach to work, which involves dedicating his attention to one project at a time, whether it’s a fresh idea for a new intellectual property or a continuation of an earlier game in a series.

He mentioned that the goal we’re striving for is this particular conclusion. However, to have another one, another instance, another venture, numerous factors need to line up perfectly, and I can’t promise it will happen. At present, my attention is fixed on this current phase, and if HBO decides to renew us, then possibly the next one. As for now, I’m also working on a new game titled “[Intergalactic]”.

I prefer to tackle one task at a time, giving my best efforts to ensure its quality. If an opportunity for another project arises afterwards, I’ll direct my attention towards that new endeavor.

As a passionate fan, I was intrigued when Druckmann clarified his earlier remarks regarding the potential future of “The Last of Us” franchise. Previously, he had suggested that fans might want to reconsider their expectations for more installments in the series.

The interviewer, quoting Druckmann, stated, “There may not be any more of ‘The Last of Us.'” In other words, this could be the end of the series.

Previously, Druckmann expressed his dislike for pre-planning sequels, and during a chat with Cory Barlog from Sony Santa Monica, he reiterated that he doesn’t view games as ongoing franchises. Instead, he approaches each project as if it’s the only game in the series.

Druckmann explained that while working on The Last of Us 2, it’s better not to focus too much on potential sequels. Instead, he advises considering the project as if it might be the only one you ever get to work on. In other words, if a great idea comes up, he tries to incorporate it into the current game rather than saving it for a hypothetical future project.
