This fear ultimately leads Joel to carry out a devastating act by eliminating all Fireflies who aimed to use Ellie to develop a cure for the world’s infectious outbreak. Ellie yearns to aid and give her life purpose, but Joel inadvertently strips her of this opportunity, creating a rift between them as the story unfolds in The Last of Us Season 2. The second adventure for the pair starts off with them already at odds regarding the Fireflies, and it isn’t until Episode 6 that this secret is revealed. Ellie has always suspected Joel of lying about the Fireflies, but she needs some time to verify her suspicions. In a confrontation, Ellie accuses him, and their relationship never recovers from this, causing great sorrow for Joel. Luckily, the remainder of the episode focuses on the close bond they share, including a journey that replicates the most memorable scene in The Last of Us video games.

In Episode 6 of Season 2, we delve into the backstory of Ellie and Joel’s time in Jackson before Abby’s arrival. Initially, their bond was strong, with Joel making a point to plan something unique for Ellie on her birthday each year. While out on duty, Joel discovers the rundown Wyoming Museum of Science, which he subsequently restores and maintains, fixing even the solar system diorama. Upon bringing Ellie there, she’s captivated by an outdoor dinosaur statue that she can’t resist climbing, but the real joy comes from exploring the museum itself.

The show omits certain gameplay aspects that involve exploring entryways, but still manages to deliver an equally captivating experience. Ellie navigates to the space exhibit and is awestruck by it. Yet, Joel swiftly guides her towards a genuine landing pod, leaving Ellie spellbound. She selects a spacesuit and climbs in as her guardian figure plays for her the audio of the Apollo 11 launch. For a brief while, Joel transports Ellie to another realm, one free from infected or marauders.

In The Last of Us Part II game, the museum scene is designed to highlight the powerful connection between Ellie and Joel prior to their circumstances taking a turn for the worse. While other methods could have been employed to convey this, the HBO series opted not to bypass this significant moment from the original work. Instead, it decided to pay homage to the source material by contrasting one of Ellie’s happiest moments with her most troubled ones.

HBO Knows When Not to Take a Big Swing With The Last of Us

In the second season of “The Last of Us,” certain changes have sparked much debate among fans. Many had anticipated Ellie would unleash a rampage through the streets of Seattle, as portrayed in the games, but her storyline deviates due to Dina’s significant role in the narrative. Instead of merely offering comfort during emotional moments, Dina is an active participant in the mission. It isn’t until Dina gets injured that Ellie finds renewed focus and recalls what she’s been fighting for all along.

When Ellie confronts Nora at last, a deluge of memories with Joel surfaces within her. She recalls both the unpleasant incidents like when Joel ended Eugene’s life instead of granting him one final visit with Gail, and the joyful moments such as their time on the porch and their excursion to the museum. The opportunity for Ellie to succumb to her darker nature presents itself now, a possibility brought about by HBO skillfully focusing on crucial elements from the The Last of Us video games series.
