In a stunning twist, the finale of The Last of Us Season 2 saw the unexpected demise of Joel (Pedro Pascal) at the hands of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) and her group of survivors. Although we know little about this team other than they were ex-Fireflies, who intersected during the climax of Season 1, the latest episode, titled “Through the Valley,” offers a glimpse into where the narrative is headed in the coming weeks. With many fans reeling from Joel’s death, those who didn’t play the PlayStation game are eager to learn what’s next for Season 2. To satisfy the curiosity of viewers about Abby and her team’s whereabouts, we introduce you to the group responsible for Joel’s passing: the WLF.
In “Through the Valley,” I find myself in the protective embrace of Joel and Dina, as we embark on our usual scout for the infected. After they rescue me from a tight spot, I decide to return their kindness by inviting them to my temporary camp at the lodge where my group is staying. With the harsh winter cold and blizzard conditions, they gratefully accept my offer and make their way there. However, things quickly take a turn for the worse when Dina spots a WLF badge on one of the ex-Fireflies’ backpacks near the fireplace. This discovery triggers a chain of events that leads to our group taking them hostage. In a heartbreaking moment, Dina is drugged by Mel, and Joel takes a shotgun blast to his knees. (Minor spoilers for The Last of Us Part II follow.)
The WLF Will Play a Major Role in The Last of Us Season 2
For those unfamiliar with the game, WLF refers to the Washington Liberation Front, or colloquially known as Wolves. This armed group operates primarily in Seattle, Washington, where the Fireflies relocated following the Salt Lake City Hospital incident in Season 1. In simpler terms, without delving too deep into the storyline of The Last of Us Part II, the WLF assumes control over Seattle by seizing all FEDRA checkpoints once owned by the military, which no longer exists.
In Episode 3, a sneak peek hints at the Wolf’s Lair Faction (WLF) engaging in conflict with the Seraphites, also known as the Scars, who will play a more significant role later in the series. A notable character to watch is Isaac, the leader of the WLF, who reprises his role from the second part, having been nominated for an Academy Award – Jeffrey Wright. The trailer suggests a heated exchange between Isaac and a captive Scar. As the story unfolds, following Ellie’s quest for revenge against Abby, we’ll witness the WLF taking action much sooner than expected.
HBO will release the latest episode of The Last of Us Season 2 on MAX on April 27th.
