The Last of Us Just Introduced a Terrifying New Cult

In the second season of “The Last of Us,” one of the most formidable perils from the game has been introduced. While “The Last of Us” is a story about a world overrun by zombie-like creatures, it’s essential to remember that humans can be just as dangerous, if not more so. They possess weapons, they are capable of deception, and in some aspects, they exhibit a level of intelligence that makes them a formidable adversary. The first season showcased various ways they could inflict harm, from cult-like behavior to cannibalism or simply mindless violence. However, the world of “The Last of Us” has barely scratched the surface in terms of what it holds.

In the second installment, fresh perils emerged from newly contaminated entities, namely the WLF and the Seraphites. As Episode 3 of The Last of Us Season 2 unveils, a significant portion of the series ahead will unfold in Seattle – a battleground dominated by the WLF, the faction where Abby and her comrades reside. This group will undoubtedly present numerous hurdles for Ellie and Dina as they pursue their vengeance mission. However, there’s much more to the story than just the WLF. Although they appear to exert the most authority in Seattle, they are not the only power players in the city.

Who Are the Seraphites in The Last of Us Season 2?

In the second season of “The Last of Us,” we catch a glimpse into the enigmatic community known as the Seraphites, who inhabit Seattle and its surroundings. Towards the heart of an episode, we observe a band of individuals clad in robes, sporting facial scars, meandering through woodlands. Tragically, they are ambushed, resulting in the brutal slaughter of every member, including innocent children. Ellie and Dina suspect that the Wolves’ Front Line Militia (WLF) is responsible for this heinous act, since there were no bite marks on the victims and it doesn’t appear to be the work of common looters.

In Episode 3, the series doesn’t delve deeply into the background of the Seraphites, but we can share some insights from the “The Last of Us” video game. Known as Scars due to facial markings, the Seraphites are a secluded group resembling a religious cult. Their mindset is deeply rooted in ancient ways, predating even the onset of the apocalypse. They shun modern technology and live in isolation, teaching their members to view outsiders with hostility. In extreme cases, they subject those who don’t conform to their beliefs to brutal torture, including gutted as a form of punishment.

The Seraphites communicate via secret whistles that can be heard from afar, yet are unintelligible to their adversaries. In the game, if you hear these whistles, it means you need to quickly take cover and get ready for a fight. Essentially, the Seraphites won’t be friendly towards Ellie or the WLF. The Seraphites will present a danger to Ellie, but their part in the bigger story might not become clear or even apparent until the airing of The Last of Us Season 3.
