It appears increasingly unlikely that we’ll see “The Last of Us Part 3” in the future, given recent updates from PlayStation. Ever since “The Last of Us Part 2” was released in 2020, fans have speculated about a potential third installment in the Naughty Dog series. Over this period, The Last of Us director Neil Druckmann has hinted at concepts for a third game, but lately, he’s expressed doubt that these ideas will ever materialize. With the latest announcement from PlayStation and Naughty Dog, it seems like “The Last of Us Part 2” might be the final chapter in the series.
Currently, Sony has launched a new collection called “The Last of Us Complete,” which includes the remastered versions of both “The Last of Us Part 1” and “The Last of Us Part 2.” This set is now available for digital download, with a physical version coming later. By purchasing this bundle, you’ll get access to both games in one convenient package. The price for “The Last of Us Complete” is $99.99, making it cheaper than buying the two games separately. This collection serves as an entry point for newcomers to the series who want to jump straight into the action.
At first sight, it may not appear significant, but the labeling of this collection as “complete” by PlayStation raises some eyebrows. If they’re referring to The Last of Us story being fully told across both games, then it suggests that there won’t be any further continuations. However, this is just speculation and doesn’t confirm anything. It’s odd for PlayStation to use such terminology if they were indeed planning on releasing The Last of Us Part 3 in the future.
In other words, the term “complete” has been frequently employed, particularly with regards to rereleases of video games. Many games throughout history have come out with “expanded editions,” which combine the original game and all subsequent downloadable content into a single package for sale. Therefore, Sony’s move could just be this, but it still presents an intriguing decision regardless.
No matter what plans Naughty Dog may have for The Last of Us in the future, we can confirm that The Last of Us Part 3 will not be their next project. Instead, they are working on a new intellectual property titled Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, which is expected to launch on PlayStation 5 at some point in the near future.
