As a gamer immersed in HBO’s The Last of Us, I must say that the latest episode titled “Feel Her Love” took me on another emotional rollercoaster. This installment was a definite high point, effectively capturing crucial moments and cleverly tying its narrative back to the original game.
There will be story spoilers in this review.
After making it through their first day in Seattle with only a slim margin for error, life isn’t becoming any simpler for Ellie and Dina. Now more united than ever as a pair, they are focusing on a nearby hospital as their next target, hoping to locate someone from Abby’s group.
Isabella Merced continues to shine brightly in this series with powerful performances and a more determined portrayal of her character. However, this particular episode will showcase Bella Ramsey’s talents as she takes on significant, substantial scenes that will further unfold in the upcoming episodes.
In contrast, Ramsey appears less impactful for us. This section of the narrative exposes some significant weaknesses in his character, revealing traits like recklessness, animosity, anger, and a dark, sadistic side. However, these characteristics aren’t presented with the same emotional depth as Ashley Johnson exhibited in the game.
In an effort to respect their individuality, we strive not to compare every aspect of the show with the game. After all, they each have their own unique existence. Nevertheless, there seems to be a lack of depth in Ellie’s portrayal within this adaptation of the story, which becomes apparent during crucial scenes in this episode.
While they aren’t terrible by any means, they are quite enjoyable. Unfortunately, the content delivered in the game surpasses expectations, being nothing short of a true masterpiece. However, viewers on TV are only experiencing something that is merely excellent, at best.
Despite focusing on big emotional moments in future episodes, this recent installment once again demonstrates the show’s exceptional ability to create tension. From encounters with the infected to a bold reintroduction of the Seraphites, this episode consistently tightens and relaxes its hold.
Everything builds up to a thrilling moment where spores make their appearance. Since spores serve as the primary means of contamination in the game, it was quite fascinating to see the series introduce tendrils instead. However, despite the change, we found it to be an engaging twist that we appreciated.
Yet, we were excited about the possibility of spores returning to the series, and they managed to do so in a manner that hinted at a major event from the game (which seems to be reserved for season three). This twist works well for new viewers, and it’s a satisfying full circle moment for gamers who are fans of the series.
Over the past couple of episodes, there’s been a lot happening, highlighting the power of this adaptation. As we approach some deeply emotional scenes, it’s here where the series will truly shine. With only two episodes left, let’s hope that Mazin and the team can deliver!
