In the premiere of Season 2 of “The Last of Us“, viewers were treated to a scene that wasn’t part of the storyline in “The Last of Us Part 2″ video game. For the most part, the first season of “The Last of Us” closely followed its source material. However, there were minor departures from the game’s plot here and there. These discrepancies weren’t significant enough to alter the overall narrative. Despite this pattern, it appears that Season 2 will continue in a similar vein. Yet, the recent episode of the series introduced a scene entirely unique to the TV show.
Caution: Details from the first episode of Season 2 of The Last of Us that might reveal key plot points follow. Proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.
Prior to the start of The Last of Us Season 2, viewers encounter a group of Fireflies survivors, led by Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), who are seen burying their fallen comrades following an attack on their base from Season 1. Pondering their next steps, Abby swears retribution against Joel for his actions in the past, intending to track him down and exact a painful revenge when the opportunity arises.
Contrasting with The Last of Us Part II game, Abby and her ex-Fireflies group are introduced without any prior context. When they initially appear, players aren’t sure if they’re allies or enemies, leaving them puzzled about their role in the story. However, the reason for their presence soon becomes clear, but the narrative opts to clarify this at the start by depicting them burying their dead. This approach gives more dimension to their characters and signals that a vengeful force is lurking in the world, intent on punishing Joel.
In addition to altering the introduction of Abby and the ex-Fireflies compared to the game, The Last of Us TV show takes another step: it reintroduces giraffes living in Salt Lake City once more. Although the presence of the giraffes is a significant event in both the game and series, they are not seen again outside of this scene within the video games. In Season 2, these giraffes are brought back for no other purpose than to reassure fans that they continue to inhabit the city peacefully. With Abby and the former Fireflies seemingly heading towards Seattle, the giraffes will remain behind, guarding the graves of those Fireflies who perished.
Right now, “The Last of Us” Season 2 is being broadcast on both HBO and Max. In all, the season consists of seven episodes, with a fresh episode airing every Sunday at 9PM Eastern Time and 6PM Pacific Time.
