As a die-hard fan who has been eagerly waiting for the return of “The Last of Us,” I can hardly contain my excitement! With the confirmation that Season 2 will grace our screens in the second quarter of 2025, it’s like a beacon of hope amidst the cold, dark winters we’ve endured since the first season wrapped up.
It has been officially announced that the second season of HBO’s “The Last of Us” will be released in the second quarter of 2025. During a presentation at the Wells Fargo TMT Summit, JB Perrette, CEO and president of global streaming at Warner Bros. Discovery, gave updates on HBO’s upcoming programming, explaining when we can expect to see “The Last of Us” in the network’s lineup. (Source: Deadline)
During this summer, some of our major releases returned, including the second part of ‘House of The Dragon’. Following this, we’ll have ‘The White Lotus’ airing in February’s first quarter. In the second quarter, we’ll see the release of ‘The Last Of Us‘ Season 2. After that, a new ‘Game of Thrones’ series titled ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms‘ is planned for the summer months, with a smaller scale production.
According to HBO CEO Casey Bloys, who shared this information back in November, the release window for “The Last of Us” Season 2 aligns with previous discussions about the show. He mentioned that the series was aiming for a spring 2025 premiere. Since the second quarter of the year falls between April and June, it’s reasonable to expect that “The Last of Us” will make its comeback during one of these months. As of now, an official release date has yet to be disclosed.
Though you won’t see “The Last of Us” Season 2 until a few months from now, HBO has already kicked off its promotional efforts. As early as September, it celebrated “The Last of Us Day” by unveiling the first trailer for Season 2, giving viewers a glimpse into the emotional turmoil they’ll encounter when Joel and Ellie’s tale resumes. Interestingly, that initial preview merely confirmed 2025 as the launch period, but now fans have a more precise release date to look forward to on their calendars.
It’s understandable that Season 2 of The Last of Us won’t air until spring, as HBO has a packed schedule for 2025 with numerous prominent series set to premiere. Just like a movie studio spreading out their big releases to ensure each one gets its moment in the spotlight, HBO wants to prevent its shows from competing directly with each other. The first season of The Last of Us was universally praised, earning 24 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series. With such high anticipation for Season 2, HBO aims to replicate the success of the first season. By allowing The Last of Us to dominate popular culture in the spring and then passing the torch to a Game of Thrones spinoff in the summer, this is a strategic move for the network.
All that remains unknown is when The Last of Us Part II series on HBO will debut. Interestingly, the game was released on June 19, 2020, within the second quarter window HBO has in mind for potential releases. There’s speculation that HBO may commemorate the game’s fifth anniversary by premiering The Last of Us Season 2 in June 2025. However, this could bring it too close to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is aiming for a summer release. Given this, it seems more feasible for The Last of Us to be scheduled in April or May instead, providing more distance between HBO’s major titles. As the release window nears, an official announcement regarding the series premiere date for The Last of Us is expected soon.
