In the second season of “The Last of Us“, the narrative revolves around Ellie’s (Bella Ramsey) pursuit for vengeance. After spending five years in a peaceful life in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, she tragically loses Joel (Pedro Pascal) when a band of reformed Fireflies invade the town and take his life. The residents of Jackson Hole debate whether to retaliate against these villains, but the decision doesn’t pass as there is too much rebuilding needed following an infected attack. However, Ellie has already made up her mind, so she sets off for Seattle with Dina (Isabela Merced) in search of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) and her associates.
It soon becomes clear that Ellie and Dina are struggling to keep their heads above water amidst the escalating feud between the Washington Liberation Front and the Seraphites, which is causing chaos in Seattle. Despite this, Ellie persists and nearly achieves her objective. However, she falls short at the last minute, setting the stage for a contentious scene from The Last of Us Part II, which unfolds as the season draws to a close.
Ellie Passes the Torch in The Last of Us Season 2 Finale
Upon reaching Seattle, Dina and Ellie initially find things manageable as they track Abby’s group and gather information about the WLF. However, discovering remnants of conflicts between the WLF and Seraphites gives off a tense vibe, hinting at deeper underlying issues that the show chooses to keep hidden. Gradually, Ellie and Dina start to grasp the severity of the situation, but they are unable to delve deeper due to circumstances – Dina gets wounded by an arrow, making it necessary for her to rest.
As time runs short, Ellie hastens her plans and leaves Jesse alone at the end of Season 2. After discovering that the aquarium is where Abby has been hiding from Nora, she swiftly heads towards it when the chance arises. This path isn’t easy by any stretch, as both Ellie and a hostile group called the WLF are using the same waterway to approach the Seraphites. Ignoring all the ensuing explosions, Ellie manages to navigate through them and even briefly crosses paths with some unfriendly Seraphites. Despite these challenges, Ellie successfully arrives at the aquarium, seeming to be close to locating Abby.
In the latest season of “The Last of Us”, Ellie is unable to find Joel’s murderer, forcing her to negotiate with Owen and Mel for information. In a tense moment, Owen tries to seize control by reaching for his gun, prompting Ellie to shoot him. The bullet accidentally hits Mel, who is pregnant and begs Ellie to deliver her baby. Unable to do so, Ellie flees in embarrassment and returns to the theater to gather her things. However, before the group from Jackson can escape, Abby arrives, wounds Jesse, and fires another shot as the scene fades to black. The second season of “The Last of Us” ends by hinting that the next installment will delve into Abby’s story over the same three days that Ellie spent in Seattle.
The Last of Us Season 3 Will Borrow From Part II‘s Most Controversial Section
Similar to how Abby is scarcely seen after killing Joel in “The Last of Us” Season 2’s Part II, Ellie embarks on a destructive path through Seattle, targeting Wolves and Seraphites in her pursuit of Abby. Despite gaining insights about her adversary and catching occasional mentions, their paths don’t cross again until the theater. Meanwhile, Abby pursues her own odyssey during which she loses friends at Ellie’s hands, faces near-death experiences, and rethinks her role in Seattle’s struggle.
In the game, Abby’s segment serves a crucial purpose: it underscores the main theme of The Last of Us series – perspective. At first glance, Abby appears as an antagonist due to her actions against the protagonist from the initial game. However, her story is multifaceted and convoluted, and the game’s creators make this clear by allowing players to control Abby. As gamers delve into her world, many struggle to empathize with her because of her deeds, but by the end of the game, she becomes just as understandable as Ellie. In line with this, The Last of Us Season 3 is set to mirror the game’s approach, compelling viewers to reassess their opinions about Abby’s character.
The Last of Us Season 2 is streaming on HBO Max.
