The Last of Us Series Set to End After Just 4 Seasons—Here’s Why

The TV adaptation of The Last of Us, one of the most acclaimed video games, may have only a few more seasons left before its narrative comes to an end. Its enduring popularity stems largely from its deeply moving plot and well-crafted characters. The initial game was lauded for its poignant story about a father who loses his daughter at the onset of a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombie-like creatures. He must then escort a young girl across the country, eventually forming a bond with her that turns her into something like his surrogate child. Yet, he discovers that she may hold the key to curing the global infection, but the cost would be her life – a sacrifice he is not prepared to make.

Discussions among fans about the conclusion of the video game “The Last of Us” have been ongoing for over a decade, and the same can be said for the popular TV series adaptation. The success of the TV show was partly attributed to the fact that it was written and produced by Neil Druckmann, the creator of the game. Now, anticipation lies with the creative team for “The Last of Us” season 2, which will adapt the contentious sequel to the original game, “The Last of Us Part 2”. Although we won’t delve into why it’s contentious here, viewers can expect to quickly understand and engage in intense debates about its controversial aspects.

To put it simply, at the moment, there are just two games in “The Last of Us” series. The sequel is particularly rich and it seems reasonable that the TV show based on this game will span several seasons to do justice to its depth. Since the second game has been divided into two significant parts plus an extensive epilogue, this arrangement appears suitable for a thorough exploration. It’s also hinted that HBO may have already planned when “The Last of Us” series will conclude in its second season.

The Last of Us Will Likely End With Season 4

Prior to the April debut of The Last of Us season 2, HBO Executive Vice President Francesca Orsi shared with Deadline that they anticipate producing three additional seasons for the show, culminating in a four-season television series. However, it’s important to note that this isn’t definitive, and HBO may be open to extending the series further if necessary. At this point, Orsi suggests that it appears likely the series will span four seasons.

Although we haven’t fully decided or finalized our plan yet, it seems we might be moving through four distinct phases. I can’t guarantee that, but at the moment, it appears to be one phase followed by two more after this and then wrapping up.

It’s confirmed that Neil Druckmann is working on The Last of Us Part 3, but it seems to be in its initial stages. Naughty Dog has been focusing on their new game, Intergalactic, which was announced at The Game Awards in December and has been in development since 2020. Additionally, an online version of The Last of Us was canceled for 2023. Given these circumstances, it appears that the team hasn’t been actively working on The Last of Us Part 3 recently, which suggests that the game might not be ready when HBO finishes season 4 of The Last of Us series.

Craig Mazin, the showrunner, has mentioned they intend to stick within the games’ storylines, making it challenging to imagine them creating their own ending. This is because HBO previously discovered that deviating from the source material, as seen with Game of Thrones, isn’t always wise. However, Neil Druckmann plays a significant role in the show, so he could potentially narrate the story of the third game on television before it’s released. But doing so would ruin the game experience. Consequently, it seems improbable that this will occur. For now, we can only wait and see where HBO plans to guide The Last of Us in its upcoming seasons.
