It seems that HBO’s “The Last of Us” might have even more surprises in its future than we initially anticipated. Among video game adaptations, none has achieved as much success as “The Last of Us.” This post-apocalyptic drama struck all the desired chords with fans and beyond, resonating with both diehard gamers and newcomers alike. Critics, including those at ComicBook, were smitten by the series, and it garnered eight Emmy wins with multiple Primetime Emmy nominations, including Best Drama. Given these accolades, it’s not surprising that when asked about the future, one of the showrunners offered an intriguing response.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly prior to the second season’s April release, creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann (who directed both The Last of Us games) hinted at the possibility of a third season, although it has not been officially approved yet. Mazin indicated that discussions were taking place about the potential continuation, stating, “I believe it’s quite probable that our narrative will carry beyond Season 3, but I can’t specify how much further. And just because there may be other stories to tell doesn’t mean this is the only one we’re working on.
Afterward, I enthusiastically shared, “We’ve got a strategy! We’re clear on our next steps, but unfortunately, at this moment, I can’t reveal the exact number of episodes or seasons that will be required to reach our destination.
The Last of Us May Go Beyond a Season 2
In contrast to the first season of HBO’s post-apocalyptic journey series, which was based on the 2012 precursor and produced by Naughty Dog from Uncharted, the upcoming season will breathe life into the sequel, The Last of Us Part 2. However, the creators have been firm about the show not directly adapting the entire second game in this particular season. Neil Druckmann clarified to Entertainment Weekly that there will only be seven episodes, unlike the first’s nine-episode span. Considering that the original game required 15-16 hours to complete and Part 2 takes 24 hours, it seems more appropriate to proceed slowly rather than rush or compress the material for a better viewing experience.
Despite no official announcement of a third installment, there’s still an eagerness within the team to explore beyond “The Last of Us Part 2”. Notably, the PlayStation first-party studio is engaged with the newly revealed project, “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet”, where Neil Druckmann serves as writer and director. In a recent interview, Neil hinted that discussions about potential adaptations were happening even before the completion of “Part 2”. It’s possible that similar conversations may have started for “Part 3”, but only time will confirm whether it or other sequels will become reality in the future.
In April 2025, we can expect the second season of “The Last of Us” to premiere. If you’d like to catch up on the first season, it’s currently streaming on Max and available on HBO’s television networks.
