The Last of Us Star Kaitlyn Dever Reveals Heartbreaking Loss Just Before Filming Season 2

Heed this notice: The following text discloses significant plot points from the April 20th episode of “The Last of Us,” titled “Through the Valley.

Kaitlyn Dever‘s role on The Last of Us hit a little too close to home.

The actress has recently disclosed that her mother, Kathy, passed away due to breast cancer just weeks prior to filming the second season of the HBO series. Moreover, her role as Abby Anderson in the show became even more poignant since her character was also mourning the loss of a parent.

Indeed, during the gripping second installment of season two, Abby takes vengeance upon Pedro Pascal’s character, Joel Miller, by ending his life. This act is a reprisal for the killing of her father, whom Joel had slain when he prevented a militia group from performing a procedure on Bella Ramsey’s character, Ellie, in season one.

In her interview with Entertainment Weekly following the airing of the April 20th episode, Kaitlyn candidly admitted, “The days preceding this scene were truly difficult for me.

The 28-year-old commented that the scene was incredibly intense, both emotionally and in terms of staging. She explained that there were numerous elements to manage and a multitude of aspects to handle, being the first scene she filmed as Abby.

The award-winning actress shared insights about the challenging experience of shooting a deeply emotional scene, which occurred only a few days following her mother’s funeral.

In the process of filming this particular scene, Kaitlyn confided that she had lost her mother just a couple of weeks prior. Remarkably, her mother’s funeral took place on the very day before she started work, leaving her feeling somewhat disoriented and detached. She described herself as being in a state of fog or daze.

Craig Mazin, a co-showrunner on “The Last of Us”, recollected approaching the extraordinary predicament delicately while filming the episode.

Mazin mentioned to Entertainment Weekly that he had said, “Go at your own pace. Take as much time as you require,” reflecting on the situation. He emphasized that while the show holds significant importance for him, it is still just a TV show. He wouldn’t want to interfere with someone’s personal grieving period over their parent’s loss, particularly since the show deals with the theme of grief itself.

Back in February 2024, Kaitlyn was the one who initially announced Kathy’s passing to the world through an emotional message she posted on Instagram. This was following a 14-year struggle that Kathy had endured against breast cancer.

She titled her collection of mother-daughter photos as “My World, My Existence, My Everything.” She couldn’t find the right words. No matter what she might express, it would never equal the invaluable gifts she received from her mother throughout her life, the boundless happiness she brought, or the deep, endless, unconditional love that flowed from her to our family.

Your affection felt akin to sunshine, it comforted me during my darkest moments and brought joy when I was feeling down,” the actress from ‘Dopesick’ went on, “You were adored by all, and you remain my most cherished. You are the sweetest soul in existence. Life without you will leave an unhealable void, and I am unsure how I can carry on.

Kaitlyn went on, expressing her respect for all that her mom represented in her life, and acknowledging the things she will sorely miss now that she is no longer with us.

She expressed, “You were an extraordinary mother and wife, anyone would be fortunate to have you. Thank you for your tireless struggle on our behalf. I am eternally, eternally thankful for the precious moments we shared, dear mom… it will never suffice.

Kaitlyn concluded, “I yearn for your smile, your wit, your embraces, your affectionate gestures, simply holding your hand above all else, in the entire universe.” She added, “You always managed to brighten my day. My dearest, most charming woman. My cherished friend. Oh, how deeply I adore you. To love you is such a blessing. To have loved you for eternity, my dear Mom.
