The last weapons trailer for Monster Hunter Wilds displays wild new moves for Dual Blades

What you need to know

  • Capcom’s next upcoming mainline entry in the Monster Hunter franchise, Monster Hunter Wilds, has just received its final weapon overview gameplay trailer.
  • The trailer gives a glimpse of the Dual Blades, a fast weapon type that allows the player to charge at monsters and use a pair of short swords to chop up monsters with speedy combo attacks.
  • Monster Hunter Wilds will be released in 2025 and the platforms it will launch on include Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam.

As a researcher with over a decade of gaming experience under my belt, I must say that the latest trailer for Monster Hunter Wilds has certainly piqued my interest. The Dual Blades have always been one of my favorite weapon types, and the new gameplay mechanics they’ve introduced in this game are simply exhilarating.

We’ve completed our journey through Monster Hunter Wilds’ weapon overview series, as Capcom has just unveiled the final gameplay trailer for this upcoming title, which can be played on both Xbox and PC. The last of the fourteen weapon types to be featured, along with the new moves and gameplay adjustments it will bring, is the Dual Blades.

With Dual Blades, players are armed with a set of quick, short swords. These weapons allow for an endless chain of swift slashing attacks that seamlessly transition into one another.

Dual Blades feature a distinctive gameplay aspect called Demon Mode. This mode amplifies the user’s speed and attack power, introduces fresh assault techniques and special dodges. Yet, the Stamina meter gradually decreases when Demon Mode is engaged, hence players should be cautious and monitor their Stamina level during this state.

In Demon Mode, each strike you deliver fills a unique meter. Once this meter is full, it triggers Archdemon Mode. During Archdemon Mode, some of Demon Mode’s special attacks and stat enhancements are temporarily available even when not in Demon Mode. The main purpose of Archdemon Mode is to assist Dual Blade users in preserving their attack strength while they recharge the Stamina gauge, allowing them to quickly return to Demon Mode and continue their offensive against a monster.

From the new Monster Hunter Wilds gameplay trailer, it appears that the Dual Blades’ arsenal doesn’t show significant modifications compared to its functioning in earlier Monster Hunter series titles such as Monster Hunter World: Iceborne and Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak.

The following changes and new moves for Dual Blades seen thus far are:

  • A new Archdemon Mode-exclusive evasive move that lets you hop backward during combos to avoid attacks or reposition yourself.
  • The new Focus Strike attack for Dual Blades has you plunge both Dual Blades into a monster’s weak spot or wound, leap backward off them into the air, and use the Slinger’s grappling hook to latch back onto a monster to unleash a spinning attack where you fly across a monster’s entire body to tear their back to shreds.
  • A special dodge move in Demon Mode where if you perform a dodge roll at the last second before a monster hits you, you can completely negate the damage and attack a monster as you’re dodging them.

Could the Dual Blade user’s armor set hint at the return of an old-school monster in Monster Hunter Wilds?

In past games, the Dual Blades were an entertaining weapon that allowed players to enter a frenzied state and unleash continuous attacks without pause. A gameplay improvement I find particularly appealing from this trailer is the inclusion of the thrilling and chic aerial spinning attack, which now forms a crucial part of the Dual Blade’s repertoire due to Monster Hunter Rise’s Focus Mode feature.

In past games like Monster Hunter World and Monster Hunter Rise, players had to glide down a slope and leap off it at specific moments. However, in Monster Hunter Wilds, the aerial spinning attack can be executed freely provided you hit a vulnerable spot or inflict a wound with the Focus Strike, eliminating the need for a strict timing.

Beyond the fresh evasion techniques, it’s somewhat underwhelming that Dual Blades doesn’t seem to be receiving significant overhauls or an array of exciting new attacks like the Bow, Gunlance, and Hunting Horn. However, there’s a chance that Capcom might have some unexpected surprises hidden for Dual Blades, which they’ll unveil only when the game is launched in 2025.

The most unexpected aspect of the trailer for me is not the Dual Blades, but instead the armor the player is donning. Longtime Monster Hunter enthusiasts might recognize that the armor set appears strikingly like an armor set acquired from hunting a Congalala. Congalalas are large, pink creatures resembling monkeys and have been absent from traditional Monster Hunter games since 2017’s Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch.

Is it possible that Congalala might make a comeback and join the roster of beasts to hunt in Monster Hunter Wilds? To confirm, we’ll need to wait for Gamescom 2024, as Capcom is set to debut a cinematic trailer for Monster Hunter Wilds during their opening night live stream on August 20, 2024. This event will undoubtedly unveil fresh landscapes, new equipment to gather, and possibly new monsters to conquer.

In 2025, the highly anticipated sequel to one of Capcom’s top-tier Xbox and PC games, Monster Hunter World, titled Monster Hunter Wilds, will be released for the Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam.
