As someone who has spent countless hours following the adventures of Vox Machina, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation as we approach the third season. Keyleth, our beloved Chroma Conclave-bound druid, has shown immense growth in her journey thus far, overcoming her fears to traverse the Plane of Fire. Yet, with two more trials ahead, it seems she’s only just begun to scratch the surface of her potential.
*Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Legend of Vox Machina seasons 1 and 2.*
As a die-hard fan eagerly waiting for the upcoming third season of Critical Role’s animated series, The Legend of Vox Machina, I can’t help but reminisce about the pivotal moments that unfolded in its previous run. Here’s a brief recap from my perspective:
From where I stand as a dedicated movie enthusiast, the storyline resumed post the finale of season one, delving straight into a chilling escalation. This time, it wasn’t just the Briarwoods we had to worry about; instead, a formidable alliance of four lethal dragons – Vorugal, Thordak, Umbrasyl, and Raishan – emerged. In no time, they wreaked havoc on Emon’s grand capital city.
With their toughest adversaries ahead, this unconventional group of champions embarked on an expedition in pursuit of various mythical artifacts that could bolster their efforts against the Chroma Coalition.
If you’d like a quick summary of the primary adventure and significant plotlines from The Legend of Vox Machina before jumping into season 3, you’re in luck! Here’s a rundown of the crucial points to keep in mind.
The Legend of Vox Machina season 2 recap: Things to remember for season 3
The quest for the Vestiges of Divergence
As they discovered that a collection of old weapons, forged in the time of catastrophe with divine-striking powers, could be crucial in their battle against the Chroma Conclave, the group of adventurers embarked on a journey to locate these ancient artifacts.
Vax’ildan (spoken by Liam O’Brien) obtained the first Vestige – known as the Deathwalker’s Ward armor – following a bargain with the Raven Matron in the submerged temple of her champion in Vasselheim. This armor notably boosts his speed, agility to dodge enemies, and provides him with the ability to fly using a pair of dark-feathered wings.
In a fascinating turn of events, Kamaljiori, the enigmatic sphinx, bestowed upon Scanlan the legendary sword known as Mythcarver. This silver-hilted weapon echoes with melodious tones, amplifying his abilities as a bard. Unfortunately, it didn’t take long before Umbrasyl snatched it away from him.
After that, the group ventured into the realm of the Fey to retrieve the Fentrhas Bow. Along their journey, they encountered Saundor, a twisted archfey who was in control of the bow. After a fierce battle, Vex’ahlia managed to seize the bow which holds the power of an oracle and bramble shots.
Ultimately, Grog faces his past and engages in combat with his ruthless uncle Kevdak (portrayed by Ralph Ineson), who now rules over the Herd of Storms and possesses the Titanstone Knuckles. Following his victory, Grog acquires the formidable power of the gauntlet and the capacity to alter his size at will.
In the third season, it’s clear that the group will be on a mission to locate the four missing artifacts known as Vestiges of Divergence, which originated from the initial Critical Role campaign – Whisper, Cabal’s Ruin, Plate of Dawnmartyr, and Spire of Conflux.
Vax makes a deal with death (sort of)
In their quest for the Deathwalker’s Ward armor, the Vox Machina group venture towards a concealed crypt constructed for the Matron of Ravens, who is known as the goddess of death. This crypt is rumored to contain the remains (and armor) of its champion, Purvan Suul.
Upon entering, I soon realize that this tomb is rigged with dangerous traps. After locating a concealed lever, Percy and I reveal a colossal sarcophagus, which emerges from the ground, containing the body of Suul within it, in the Deathwalker’s Chamber.
However, as Percy grasps the artifact known as the Vestige, he unintentionally sets off a deadly trap that claims the life of Vex. Consequently, Vax barters with the Matron of Ravens, agreeing to take his place in return for her freedom, sacrificing his own life for hers.
The divine entity consents to this change, making Vax the new emissary of the Raven Queen; however, it’s clear that there are conditions tied to this agreement. The pressing issue is when will they collect on their due and take Vax’s life in repayment?
Keyleth passes her fire trial
The delightfully uneasy half-elf druid has spent a considerable amount of time on her mission, Aramenté – a noble pursuit that involves visiting the other three Ashari tribes. Upon successfully passing their trials, she will gain leadership over the Air Ashari tribe and receive the title of Voice of the Tempest.
As a dedicated film enthusiast, I must confess that Kiki, the protagonist in question, had yet to embark on any trials due to the paralyzing self-doubt she found herself entangled within. This self-doubt stemmed from her belief that her powerful mother Vilya, whose voice was masterfully brought to life by Janet Varney, failed to complete hers and has been absent ever since.
As a passionate cinephile, I’d rephrase it as follows: Amidst our tribe, the Fire Ashari, being threatened by fierce fire-beasts, I, in the face of my own fears, embark on a journey to the Infernal Realm. There, I undergo a transformative metamorphosis, becoming an elemental force, to bravely seal the rift and protect us all.
After finishing the initial trial, Keyleth now has only two more to go – the Earth and Water trials. It’s uncertain if she’ll achieve her Aramenté by the end of season 3, but her newly acquired elemental abilities will undoubtedly prove useful against the Chroma Conclave.
The party defeated Umbrasyl (just!)
Equipped with the latest Vestiges of Divergence and backed by the last members of the Herd of Storms, the group embarks on a journey to Westruun. There, Percy sets up a trap intended for Umbrasyl.
As the dragon arrives for its hoard, Vex launches an arrow to trigger a trap and ensnare him. But just when it seems successful, the dragon manages to break loose after a group assault, swiftly vanishing. After another assault by the dragon, Scanlan suggests a fresh strategy to Vax – they should enter the dragon from within if they want to make an impression.
The duo manages to penetrate deep into the dragon’s body, making their way towards its stomach. Scanlan employs Kaylie’s unyielding sword repeatedly against the dragon as it moves. Simultaneously, Umbrasyl takes flight towards the Gatshadow Mountain lair, with Grog in tow, bound to the creature by a bloodaxe and a rope.
In a bold move, Vax adopts his role as the Champion of Death, growing feathery wings to aid their daring escape from Umbrasyl alongside Scanlan. The group subsequently reunites and ventures into Umbrasyl’s lair for an assault. However, Scanlan wavers and remains at a distance. As the situation seems grim due to the dragons’ invisibility and Mythcarver’s influence, it appears that Vox Machina is in trouble. That is until Scanlan, in a cunning ploy, seizes Mythcarver and stabs the dragon in the eye, ultimately slaying the beast.
An unexpected ally unveils themselves
After Umbrasyl has been defeated, the group makes their way back to Whitestone to reassemble. During a festive gathering with their allies, everyone present suddenly faints – except for Vox Machina and Yennen, who is voiced by Gina Torres.
Later, Yennen gradually transforms into the emerald-scaled dragon named Raishan, who hails from the Chroma Conclave and is voiced by the talented Cree Summer.
The dragon confidently declares to the group that she stands with them in their mission against Thordak. She clarifies that the Cinder King’s madness requires their united efforts, emphasizing the importance of her involvement in defeating him.
Seems that Vox Machina might have to temporarily set aside their intricate bond and collaborate with the green dragon, at least for the moment.
Dragon eggs, lots of dragon eggs
In a somewhat ominous conclusion, The Legend of Vox Machina’s second season hints at a potentially threatening future as it unveils a colossal horde of dragon eggs, poised and ready.
According to our recently discovered ally, Raishak, Throdak is on the verge of welcoming an enormous number of dragons into existence from a clutch of eggs.
Next season, our band of unconventional allies will face not only the mightiest of dragons, but potentially an army of hatchlings as well. Oh dear!
