In an intense and exhilarating confrontation, the group squares off against Raishan, skillfully portrayed by Cree Summer. This encounter marks the end of the two-season-long Chroma Conclave storyline. Critters everywhere can rejoice as their favorite characters, the bard (Sam Riegel) and gunslinger (Taliesin Jaffe), return to the mortal world.

Nevertheless, following their reunion, this motley crew of outcasts disbands in the heart-wrenching last scenes, symbolizing a substantial shift away from the initial sorrowful ballad. In the final moments, a legendary Dungeons & Dragons antagonist emerged for the first time!

Following the exciting news of the series renewal for another season, let’s revisit the key plot developments in the last three episodes of The Legend of Vex Machina season 3. Enjoy the recap!

The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 ending explained: Who is The Whispered One?

This tale of The Legend of Vox Machina isn’t complete without a suspenseful finale, and let me tell you, this one is quite an epic twist!

At the climax of the series, a group of robed individuals within a temple repeated, “We serve as his eyes, we serve as his ears, we serve as his sense of touch, we embody his emotions, we are his blood.

In an unexpected moment, a floating black sphere emits bright purple sparks, giving us a fleeting glimpse of Vecna, also known as The Whispered One – a figure who has been mentioned by several characters like the Briarwoods and Zerxus Ilerez across three seasons of the series.

In the world of Dungeons & Dragons role-playing games, a character known as Vecna – famously depicted in Netflix’s Stranger Things – is often portrayed as a significant antagonist. The term ‘The Whispered One’ serves as an unofficial reference to the character within the Vox Machina context, since this isn’t an officially endorsed Wizards of the Coast property.

In the last chapter of the Vox Machina campaign, this formidable foe serves as the principal adversary, demonstrating an almost invincible final boss character.

During the initial live broadcast event, a group of devotees conspire with an old adversary to resurrect Vecna, aiming to elevate him to divine status. Unfortunately, their efforts lead to catastrophic consequences.

Since The Legend of Vox Machina has been given a fourth season, there’s a possibility that instead of exploring Taryon Darrington’s fourth arc, the team might delve into the storyline centered around the famous Dungeons & Dragons villain instead.

But how did we get here? Below are all the other major reveals.

How did the gang bring Percy back from the dead?

Among the poignant scenes displayed in the series, none has tugged at our heartstrings more than when Percy met his untimely end at the hands of Ripley (Kelly Hu) and Orthax (Matthew Mercer). This tragedy unfolded as his bond with Vex’ahlia was deepening into something more significant.

After burying him at Whitestone, the twins journeyed to Stilben, employing their pepper pots to locate Ripley, Orthax, and several insurgents aboard a vessel laden with the weaponry engineered by Percy.

After a fierce confrontation between Ripley and Vex (Laura Bailey), with the latter ultimately ending Ripley’s life by shooting an arrow through her heart and mouth, Vax (Liam O’Brien) is startled to hear Percy’s voice crying “no, please” echoing from within Ripley’s weapon.

Vax grabs his firearm and shares with his brother his idea that Percy’s spirit might be confined within the gun.

Following the act of shooting Raishan, Vax receives another call from Percy, pleading for aid. He seeks guidance from the Matron of Ravens, who reveals a method to recover his friend. However, this path contravenes the boundary between life and death. She cautions him that meddling with such matters will bring sorrow beyond compare. If Vax manages to rescue him, there will be a price to pay.

Vax seeks advice from the Council of Whitestone and Vox Machina, informing them that Percy’s spirit is trapped inside Orthax. However, if he tries to rescue him, he would be going against the wishes of the matron.

Ashley Johnson’s character, Pike, returns Percy to his original condition and places him next to Vax on the same side.

In simpler terms, “The Raven’s Champion calls forth Orthax, declaring his intention for revenge. Meanwhile, Vax is teleported to Orthax’s imprisoned realm, while Pike and Keyleth (Marisha Ray) cast a spell to bring someone back to life.

Following Percy’s discovery, Orthax cautions Vax that should he change the gunslinger’s destiny, he will no longer recognize himself and can never experience true joy again.

Ultimately, Vex manages to express her feelings for Percy, which leads to a breakthrough on his part. He then follows Vax as they journey back to the world of Exandria, thereby restoring Percy’s soul within his reanimated body and eliminating Orthax and the weapon in the process.

What happens to Scanlan?

In the heat of my thrilling tussle against Thordak, portrayed brilliantly by Lance Reddick, I found myself in a fiery standoff. As we clashed, I took some grueling hits before plummeting from the lair of the Cinder King, leaving me bruised but not broken.

Even though Pike (voiced by Ashley Johnson) made efforts to bring him back, Scanlan lay motionless and appeared trapped in a coma-like state, leaving the cleric doubtful if he would ever regain consciousness.

Yet, Pike locates the sheet music for the song Scanlan has penned for his daughter Kaylie (known as “Kaylie’s song”). With Indira Varma’s character, Allura Vysoren, they manage to find Kaylie and explain Scanlan’s predicament. They convey that he has been striving to set things right and is willing to gamble everything in order to locate her.

Pike tells Kaylie, “There’s a side of him you reveal that others can’t, maybe even inspiring him to embrace life.

At his bedside, Kaylie confides in her father that discovering him was the most delightful act anyone has ever performed for her.

As a cinephile, I can relate to this scenario: She’s basking in the thought that someone is pondering her, and longing for the moment when they’ll be together again. It’s my hope, just as she craves it, that he too finds solace in this anticipation during these trying times.

Fortunately, the cherished poet regains consciousness, enveloped in care and companionship from his dearest friends – Pike, Grog, and Kaylie. His daughter implores him to rescue the world, assuring him she’ll be there to welcome him upon completion of his task.

Does the party succeed against Raishan?

Following a successful plea to the Ashari council for permission, Keyleth undertakes and triumphs in an old yet perilous Earth Ashari rite. She taps into the power of the nexus to pinpoint the whereabouts of the final member of the Chroma Conclave.

The group, Vox Machina, journeys towards the ziggurat where they find Raishan engaged in a ceremony, intending to move her spirit into Thordak’s body as retaliation against the Ashari for giving her an illness, with the ultimate goal of annihilating them all.

In a desperate situation, with their previous defenses failing against Thordak/Raishan and the Treacherous Deceiver capturing Keyleth apart from her allies, the Air Ashari bravely holds their ground to confront their traitor.

For a second time, Keyleth harnesses the Earth Ashari nexus’ power, infecting Raishan’s latest form with her illness. Next, Vax fires Ripley’s weapon at the dragon, effectively vanquishing the last dragon of the Chroma Conclave.

Keyleth says to Vax, “Illness is a piece of the natural world, but you can manage it if you discover your balance.” Before doing so playfully and humorously, she vomits after giving him a kiss!

What happens to Vox Machina after defeating the Chroma Conclave?

After Percy and the Chroma Conclave assignment were wrapped up, Scanlan shares that he’s leaving Vox Machina temporarily to join Kaylie on her tour.

Simultaneously, Keyleth announces that the moment has come for her to fulfill her true destiny, and she will proceed with her Aramenté, accompanied by Vax who will serve as her squire by her side.

Yet, their joyful conclusion might be thwarted, for it’s disclosed that Vax’s arm carries an ominous-looking infection. He himself acknowledges that the Matron may not easily overlook his rebellion when it comes to Percy’s restoration.

Vex, Percy, and their furry companion Trinket announce their intention to accompany Gilmore to Whitestone, whereas Grog and Pike continue their duty as the guardians of the kingdom.

Their adventure closes with Scanlan and Kaylie’s duet, as the gang go on their own separate paths.
