The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 is letting its romantic relationships down

As a seasoned movie critic who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless romantic subplots in cinematic history, I must admit that The Legend of Vox Machina’s current romantic entanglements have left me with a sense of whiplash.

In the ongoing thrilling third season of The Legend of Vox Machina, our beloved group of oddball heroes engage in combat with the last standing members of the Chroma Conclave. Recently, the Critical Role ensemble has shifted their focus towards some eagerly anticipated romantic entanglements among the team members.

In the midst of their quest to uncover remaining traces, as they strive to outpace Anna Ripley and the demon Orthax, these heroes are somehow managing to inject a touch of romance into their adventures. The spotlight is currently on beloved duos such as Percival de Rolo (Taliesin Jaffe) and Vex’ahlia Vessar (Laura Bailey), along with Vex’s twin, Vax’ildan Vessar (Liam O’Brien), and Keyleth of the Air Ashari (Marisha Ray).

Beyond the flourishing ‘Vaxleth’ and ‘Perc’ildan’ vessels, there’s also a more intricate exploration of Kima and Allura’s relationship, as well as advancements in Scanlan and Pike’s ongoing partnership. But, one might wonder if it’s becoming too dense for a single season?

Caution: contains spoilers for The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 so far.

Reducing the expansive original campaign story that spans across 115 episodes totaling approximately 373 hours into manageable 12-episode seasons certainly requires substantial editing and streamlining.

Given that the animated series’ condensed timeline speeds up certain aspects, one may wonder if the Crimson Roses (CR) group will manage to establish intricate relationships concurrently with wrapping up the Chroma Conclave storyline.

To date, the story arc of beloved duo ‘Perc’ildan’ stands out as the most amusing and engaging, as their playful banter reached its peak in season 3, episode 3 titled “Vexations”, where their flirtatious moments from season 2 were finally resolved.

Yet, alterations made during the adaptation process of the initial campaign had an impact on Percy and Vex’s relationship and their overarching narrative, leading their actions towards the end to seem regrettably hasty.

In contrast to the gradual development of Vax and Keyleth’s romantic relationship over time, it appears that the exploration of Percy and Vex’s emotions and their interplay was significantly reduced in earlier seasons.

These pivotal instances during the couple’s storyline – like Vex’s demise in season 2, episode 3 (The Sunken Tomb), and Percy standing up for Vex against her abusive father in season 2 episode 7 (The Fey Realm) – failed to evoke the same emotional impact as the initial narrative, leading to less impactful story progression.

Percy’s actions indirectly led to Vex’s demise when he touched the Deathwalker’s Ward armor, which then activated a fatal trap. This incident should have been a crucial turning point for Percy, as it was his actions that had unintended consequences.

At that time, there was little emphasis on him expressing his grief or hints about his emotions towards her in the situation.

According to voice actor Liam O’Brien, the adapted campaign has led to romantic relationships appearing “hasty and pressured”. In an interview with Game Rant, he likened the tight time constraints as a “countdown to doomsday” and stated that there was “no room for relaxation or streaming services like Netflix”.

In my opinion, the casual “friends with benefits” situation that unfolded in episodes 4 to 6 of season 3, along with their playful mischief, has added a delightfully humorous contrast to the tormented character of Vaxleth. This is particularly evident in the cringe-worthy yet hilarious interactions between Percy and Vex’s twin, Vax. As a movie buff, I find myself chuckling at their exchanges more often than not!

In the meantime, the uncertain romantic dance between Vax and Keyleth has left viewers on an emotional rollercoaster. Their initial kiss in episode 1, A Deadly Bargain, was followed by Vax turning down Kiki in episode 3 due to their future seeming shrouded in misery.

The atmosphere strongly evokes the intense emotions of early 2000s emo, and the transition from the lightheartedness of Perc’ildan to the deep emotional turmoil in Vaxleth feels quite abrupt in terms of tone.

In the current season, the connection between the Raven’s Champ and the upcoming Storm’s Orator seems overly prolonged, given their personal struggles.

It appears Keyleth has accepted her future and immortality, expressing a desire to stay with Vax in the future. However, Vax’s altered personality following his visions from the Matron is drastic and contrasts sharply with his original character, disrupting the initial campaign narrative. Their storylines seem to have reversed, and this development isn’t favorable.

To elaborate, the tense interaction between them at Chateau Shorthalt in episode 6, The Coming Storm, serves to intensify the growing agitation. Despite being a continuous romantic theme throughout the animated series, their recurring emotional upheaval seems increasingly detrimental to the overall narrative progression.

Simultaneously, viewers have enjoyed seeing more of the formidable duo, Kima (played by Stephanie Beatriz) and Allura (voiced by Indira Varma), as they team up with Vox Machina in their fight against Vorugal.

In episode 5, titled “The Frigid Wastes,” a flashback scene highlights their initial connection. This scene offers valuable background information about a particular act of deceit. However, as this flashback, along with other character-building scenes, scenes involving Scanlan’s predicament with his daughter and his advance towards Pike, accumulate, they seem to slow down the overall pace and divert focus from the primary mission.

In simpler terms, the motley crew that we adore so much, the one that forms the soul of The Legend of Vox Machina, seems to be overshadowed somewhat due to the many villains and interpersonal relationship complexities being handled simultaneously. This juggling act appears to have an impact on some story arcs.

Also, justice for more sweet Grog and Pike best friend moments!
