The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 needs to do right by one key character

As a film enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the intricate worlds of fantasy series and RPG campaigns, I must say that my anticipation for The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 is at an all-time high. The return of our beloved band of misfits, facing their biggest challenge yet with the Chroma Conclave dragons, promises a captivating journey filled with epic battles, emotional twists, and, most importantly, character growth.

“The future is frightening, but it’s a future which hasn’t yet been written.”

In about a month, The Legend of Vox Machina will be back on our screens for the thrilling start of season 3, picking up from the suspenseful ending of season 2. This much-loved group of oddball heroes are gearing up to confront their toughest test yet as they face off against three dragons from the Chroma Conclave.

Of course, as we continue our search for the last four pieces of divergence and test our alliances, not to mention the emergence of both familiar and new adversaries, and with the constant presence of the Raven Queen casting a long shadow, there’s no doubt that the Chroma Conclave saga is filled with multiple challenges to manage – a fact worth noting given that this story arc was originally comprised of an impressive 45 episodes in the Critical Role role-playing game campaign!

As a movie critic, I must admit that the ongoing Prime Video series boasts epic, colossal battles and a rollercoaster ride of emotional ups and downs. Yet, with such grandiose events looming on the horizon, there’s a palpable danger of sacrificing crucial character development moments, particularly the captivating arc of Keyleth the Air Ashari (breathtakingly portrayed by Marisha Ray).

Caution: spoilers ahead for The Legend of Vox Machina season 2 and campaign one of Critical Role.

Even though Keyleth didn’t resonate with some fans during the initial Critical Role RPG game, causing an unfortunate wave of negative online comments, it’s clear that she plays a significant role within the Vox Machina group due to numerous compelling reasons.

Beyond being a charmingly lovable figure and surprisingly relatable (hello, social awkwardness!), the half-elf Druid of the Moon Circle exhibits an exceptionally versatile magic-user ability and is one of the most influential and potent characters in Exandria and Critical Role’s series of campaigns.

She assumes a pivotal position during the Chroma Conclave storyline (“Don’t call me child another goddamn time!”), experiences one of the most significant character transformations throughout the initial campaign, and her bond with Vax’ildan is indisputably cherished by fans.

(Plus, her Keyfish wild shape moment is one of the funniest demonstrations of hubris!)

To make it easier for the audience to connect with Kiki’s essential desires, anxieties, and aspirations right away, the CR group strategically rearranged the sequence of events in her journey.

To provide a comprehensive understanding of Kiki’s character and background, we’ve chosen to share her story from its beginning. This approach allows viewers to witness Kiki’s evolving self-doubt, her apprehensions about her future, and her worries regarding her (and her mother’s) predicament due to the Aramenté, rather than joining her journey midway and potentially missing crucial aspects that shape her personality.

For quite some time now, I’ve embarked on an honorable journey, with the objective of visiting the three remaining Ashari tribes. My intention is to traverse their elemental realms and successfully overcome the challenges they present.

Similar to how Percy’s Whitestone arc captivates readers, the Aramenté element is equally engaging, reminiscent of Avatar: The Last Airbender. However, it’s important to note that we have barely explored the depths of her journey and the subsequent changes in Kiki.

In the memorable episode “Pass Through Fire” from season 2, Keyleth accomplished the initial trial by transforming into a Fire Elemental. This transformation was remarkable as she courageously sealed the fissure in Pyrah, effectively halting the aggressive attack of the Fire Ashari.

As a devoted fan, I must admit that while Kiki didn’t receive as much attention as Percy or Vax during the initial campaign, it appears the Critical Role team is eager to rectify this, subtly teasing an intriguing trial in the upcoming storyline – a trial that us viewers were not privy to.

In the preview for Season 3, there’s a scene where Keyleth is seen wailing and weeping at a tombstone for Vox Machina, accompanied by an emotional opening title shot of the group journeying together. As the sequence progresses, each party member gradually disappears in a chilling manner until only Keyleth remains.

As a cinephile, I found myself captivated by the intricately woven plotlines, subtly suggesting that our protagonist’s Earth trial is imminent. This development seems to be another chapter in her Aramenté, leaving us eagerly anticipating a long-awaited glimpse into this pivotal event.

In the original campaign, Keyleth disclosed to the group that her Aramenté initiation took place with the Earth Trial among the Terra Ashari during a six-month break of Vox Machina (episode 1×08 Glass and Bone), which differs from the Fire Trial depicted in the animated series.

In this initial test, Keyleth embarked on a vision journey, revealing to her two distinct future scenarios. One of Keyleth’s significant concerns is outliving and eventually losing everyone dear to her after assuming the role of ‘Voice of the Tempest’, given that she would age at an unusually slow pace.

This ordeal challenged her strength of character and determination to persevere through immense hardship. I hope that the Critical Role team has devoted sufficient time and emotional depth to portray this trial accurately, mirroring the impact seen in ‘Pass Through Fire’, on Keyleth’s character development.

Furthermore, it appears that her connection with Vax’ildan (Liam O’Brien) has been developing gradually, leaving some Vaxleth followers feeling underwhelmed. However, the season 3 trailer hints at a passionate kiss between them, suggesting that their romance might finally come to fruition and capture the spotlight.

Regardless of the fact that Keyleth’s existence is temporarily extended due to his pact with the Raven Queen, their bond plays a significant role in her personal development as she faces her deep-seated fears about losing him (and others dear to her), an eventuality that remains uncertain in a future yet unwritten.

In addition to assisting the half-elf character, both as a rogue and a paladin, they boost Keyleth’s self-assurance and faith in her skills. There’s a strong desire for their charming moment from episode 1×81, “What Lies Beneath the Surface,” to be incorporated into the adaptation.

Vax says, “It’s clear that you’re questioning your abilities, but let me assure you, there’s no question about your potential. Over the years, I’ve watched your resilience flourish. One day, I have no doubt you’ll become an exceptional leader.

Given that the third season has just 12 episodes and the group is yet to locate the last remnants of divergence to vanquish the remaining three dragons, will there be sufficient time to properly develop this crucial aspect of Keyleth’s storyline?

If Critical Role decides to bring their third campaign, Hells Bells, to life focusing on the Mighty NeiN, it’s crucial that the group ensures Keyleth’s journey is treated with due respect and significance.

For someone who’s been through the metaphorical “fire” and struggles with self-doubt, she truly earns her moment in the spotlight.
