The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 needs to get one crucial moment right

The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 needs to get one crucial moment right

As a seasoned Dungeons & Dragons enthusiast and a devoted follower of Critical Role since its early days, I am beyond thrilled about the upcoming third season of The Legend of Vox Machina! The cliffhanger at the end of season two had me on the edge of my seat, eagerly anticipating what’s next for our beloved ragtag band of adventurers.

In simple terms, the second season of Critical Role’s adult-oriented animated show, The Legend of Vox Machina, found our cherished group of misfit adventurers in quite a tricky predicament.

Although they just managed to overcome Umbrasyl, the unconventional champions from Exandria are yet to face off against three more formidable members of the Chroma Conclave, who are without a doubt the strongest and most influential among them.

Not only are the three dragons poised for action, but it seems that Throdak is also on the verge of unleashing an entire legion of dragons, as hinted by my newly-acquired comrade, Raishan.

Even armed with their vestiges of divergence, along with new weapons and upgrades, the party still might not be a match for The Cinder King and co. Brace yourself, for this season is undoubtedly set to be an emotional one!

I’d prefer if the CR group sticks to the most significant events from the initial campaign, defying the modern tendency for characters to avoid death and repercussions. By wholeheartedly embracing the main emotional moments from the original storyline, they can create an intense and meaningful journey – one that will be both heart-wrenching and memorable.

Caution: mild spoilers for Critical Role campaign one lie ahead.

People who tuned in weekly to Critical Role’s initial live broadcast of their tabletop role-playing game (RPG) can’t help but recall the numerous poignant scenes, intense emotional journeys, and character demises that unfolded during the two-year storyline.

In Dungeons & Dragons, a popular role-playing game known for its unpredictable nature, the outcome can be heavily influenced by luck as determined by the roll of a die. Consequently, death is an authentic aspect of the game, especially in campaigns that focus heavily on combat.

Regardless of Vox Machina’s formidable team, it’s quite possible they could suffer near-fatal blows or even lose members during their heroic endeavors to protect Tal’Dorei from the Chroma Conclave. I regret to inform you that some characters meet their untimely end in these perilous battles.

Great news! There are numerous strategies available in the game, such as achieving three successes during death saving throws or using specific class abilities, divine priests, or even negotiating with a deity like The Raven Queen, which can help characters evade death or be brought back to life.

But the measure of a good campaign – and in turn, a good dungeon master (DM) – is balancing the excitement and challenge of the combat/test with real in-game stakes and consequences.

This predicament is where the CR group currently finds itself during this season, and significant events lie ahead. Will they wholeheartedly embrace these situations? If not, will the emotional impacts hold their intended weight?

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I can’t help but express my feelings about Hollywood’s recurring pattern that seems to undo substantial and poignant deaths and farewells in our beloved pop culture narratives. Take, for instance, the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Robert Downey Jr as Doctor Doom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For fans like me, these comebacks have somewhat tarnished the essence of repercussions and mortality within these captivating stories.

Indeed, much like how the Multiverse, alternate timelines, and variants work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe allow for the return of cherished characters, spells and resurrections in Dungeons & Dragons serve a similar purpose. However, the question remains: what price must be paid for these returns? Will the Critical Role gang resist the inevitable losses that lie ahead?

It seems that, based on Travis Willingham’s comments in a recent Entertainment Weekly interview, season 3 of CR could potentially make a lasting impact.

He added, “For the first time, things won’t end up exactly as they began at the start of the season.

This situation will reveal the unique traits of each person involved; it’ll scrutinize bonds, ranging from familial ties to romantic ones; moreover, it will gradually unveil the fractures within this closely connected family unit.

In simple terms, the trailer and intro for season 3 suggest that our cherished characters will face significant emotional upheaval and challenging situations. Notably, there are many instances of raven feathers falling and a particularly poignant scene where Keyleth walks alone while the rest of the VM party seem to disappear.

As the ominous pact between the renegade half-elf and the Lady of Shadows, the Raven Queen, approaches, and an army of vindictive dragons threatens, the adventurers known as Vox Machina are undoubtedly up against their most formidable test to date.

Various creatures are preparing for an epic showdown against a dragon, which may include the iconic question “What’s my mother’s name?” and a sorrowful ballad by a bard, potentially marking one of Vox Machina’s most memorable scenes to come.

This one crucial element will either make or break the group going forward, setting up events for the fourth arc of the first campaign (if greenlit by Prime Video).

Is it possible for the Creative Team (CR) to craft compelling narratives, complete with authentic outcomes and deep emotional resonance, to successfully execute this significant event?

Although some adjustments have been made from the initial campaign due to the need to fit over 400 hours into a more manageable format, the animated version has remained faithful to crucial scenes and essential character growth thus far.

Even though we might have to wait for a hypothetical fourth season, it’s exciting to imagine more suspenseful twists and turns! Can’t wait until October 3rd!
