The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Widsom Was Originally Supposed to Feature a Talking Link

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but appreciate the rich history and tradition that games like The Legend of Zelda carry. However, it’s always fascinating to learn about the behind-the-scenes decisions that shape these beloved titles. In the case of Echoes of Wisdom, the idea of a talking Link was intriguing, to say the least.

In a span of over a decade, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom stood out as a remarkable 2D release. However, what truly set it apart was its unique feature – it was the first major Zelda game to feature Princess Zelda as the playable character, pushing Link into a secondary role. If certain events had unfolded differently, Link’s part in the game might have deviated even further from the series’ established traditions.

In a conversation with Famitsu, producers Eiji Aonuma (from The Legend of Zelda series) and Satoshi Terada (from Echoes of Wisdom), shared an interesting tidbit about their work. Originally, the game had a talking Link, which would have been a first for this character. However, they decided to keep Link silent as usual in the series because a talking Link didn’t quite fit the feel of the games.

“Actually, Link was speaking at first,” Aonuma said (via VGC).

According to Terada, he had Link speak for a moment. However, no matter what dialogue he assigned to him, it seemed out of place or inappropriate.

In Aonuma’s words, “Link doesn’t usually talk that way.” He continued, “It felt odd because Link hasn’t spoken before. Since we didn’t know what he would say, it made sense to create a scenario where Link couldn’t speak. That’s how part of the story was developed.

As a devoted Zelda fan, I’ve often wondered about the future of Link as a silent protagonist. It’s intriguing to know that even the creators behind this beloved series grapple with the same question from time to time. With a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda underway, it will be fascinating to observe how they portray Link when the movie eventually hits the screens.
