The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom Players Warned About Major Downside of Switch Game

As a longtime Zelda enthusiast who’s been through numerous adventures with Link, I must say that “Echoes of Wisdom” promises a captivating journey, but its technical hiccups have left me feeling like I’m traversing a treacherous path filled with unexpected potholes.

This week saw the long-awaited launch of “The Legend of Zelda: Wisdom’s Echo” on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch OLED. Critics are raving about it as one of the best Nintendo Switch games of the year, with a Metacritic score of 86. However, fans of “Legend of Zelda” should be aware of a significant drawback that is dampening the gaming experience for many early players.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t deny the visual appeal of “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.” However, its performance leaves much to be desired. The frame rate issues are quite noticeable and have been causing frustration among players. A glance at the Nintendo Switch Reddit page confirms this, with praise for the game coexisting alongside criticism, particularly about the game’s frame rate.

The top post on the Switch Reddit page says, “Echoes of Wisdom plays terribly, but is an amazing game,” expressing frustration. “I was looking forward to it because it’s such an enjoyable experience… It’s fantastic when it runs smoothly at 60fps, its intended frame rate. Inside dungeons and buildings, the controls are incredibly responsive and precise. The exploration is a joy.

The post continues: “But walking anywhere in the overworld is a s**t show. You cannot move 10 seconds in any direction without hitting abrupt, jarring framerate dips and ridiculous frame pacing. The game jumps off a cliff from a fluid 60 down to 30 (which is … fine?) and then claws its way back up to 60 over 2-3 seconds…only to chug back down to 30 again as you move 5 more steps. This results in a constant yo-yo effect that makes it feel like you’re sprinting through the forest and constantly stepping in potholes filled with ankle-deep mud. As the game ‘recovers’ or anticipates these slowdowns, it also hitches constantly. So even when you’re not in the “mud,” you’re getting jarring fps dips that make traversal feel awful. In a game that’s about exploration and discovery, this is a bad experience.”

The post adds that they expect more from a premium $60 product from Nintendo. And judging by the popularity of the post, and many of the comments, others feel the same way. That said, performance issues are not new on the Switch, which is very underpowered. Meanwhile, it seems like this issue is not a major deterrent for the vast majority of players so far.
