The game “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom” was actually intended to be a follow-up to the classic game “A Link to the Past” from Nintendo and Grezzo. Despite not hinting at its original development, this latest action-adventure release has generated buzz within the gaming industry due to its compelling Zelda-centric story that ranks among the best in the beloved series. However, it was disclosed in an interview that “Echoes of Wisdom” was produced during the development phase for what was originally planned as a sequel to the 1992 SNES title “The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past“.
In a conversation with the Polish site naEkranie, the creators of Echoes of Wisdom – Tomomi Sano, Satoshi Terada, and Eiji Aonuma – discussed the progress of their project. This collaboration is their sixth with Grezzo, who remade The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening in 2019. Fans have observed a striking similarity between the map and certain races (Zoras and Dekus) featured in Echoes of Wisdom and Link to the Past, a detail brought up during the interview. During the discussion, Echoes of Wisdom’s director Tomomi Sano acknowledged this connection.
Initially, we determined the rules for gameplay and certain settings. Once these were established, we selected areas associated with water and forests as examples. For these specific environments, we opted for particular races like River Zoras and Sea Zoras in water areas, and Deku Scrubs in forest regions. Since Grezzo was involved in the Majora’s Mask remake that showcased these races, we decided to incorporate them into our game in a manner consistent with the storyline.
Nintendo and Grezzo Initially Planned on Making A Link to the Past Sequel
Grezzo’s work has highlighted some beloved Zelda games such as “The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D” and “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D” on the Nintendo 3DS around a decade back. Since they had already collaborated with Nintendo on one original Zelda game, “The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes,” in 2015, the shift towards creating an entirely new story was primarily driven by the alterations in gameplay and characters.
Designing a fresh gameplay style proved challenging, but incorporating ‘Echoes’ offered an intriguing method for our team to reflect the distinctive graphics of Grezzo’s ‘The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening’. When director Satoshi Terada was questioned about the design using ‘Echoes’, he shared the team’s focus and their apprehensions.
The diversity in the game’s Echoes is quite remarkable, making it challenging to foresee how players would manipulate and engage them. To provide structure, we set objectives such as reaching a specific height, attacking certain enemies, or vanquishing foes. We left the methodology to the players, only ensuring that these tasks could be accomplished without causing the game to malfunction. Initially, we believed balancing this aspect would be difficult, but it turned out to be simpler than anticipated with this approach.
The inclusion of echoes and Zelda was a smart decision, as it contributed significantly to the game becoming one of Nintendo’s top games in 2024. Although some fans might have preferred a remake of “A Link to the Past,” there’s no denying that the likelihood of this title appearing on the Nintendo Switch 2 is strong. Given that the Zelda series doesn’t have any upcoming new releases, it’s plausible to anticipate some fresh content coming from a collaboration between Nintendo and Grezzo.
