As a movie enthusiast with a penchant for thought-provoking dramas that delve deep into human psyche and societal issues, I find myself eagerly anticipating the arrival of “The Listeners.” With its intriguing premise, stellar cast, and promising exploration of themes such as transcendence, conspiracy culture, and community in our polarized times, it’s a production that immediately piques my interest.
In a new BBC production titled “The Listeners,” actress Rebecca Hall takes center stage. This series is an adaptation from the book by Jordan Tannahill with the same title. Now, here’s the exciting news: we finally have a release date for this anticipated drama!
The mysterious new play titled “…”, featuring actors like Prasanna Puwanarajah, Mia Tharia, Gayle Rankin, and Amr Waked, is set to premiere simultaneously on both BBC One television channel and BBC iPlayer platform at 9 o’clock in the evening on Tuesday, November 19th.
The show centers around the character of Claire, who’s an English teacher. Her routine life takes an unexpected turn as she begins to notice an enigmatic humming noise that others cannot perceive, and medical examinations fail to reveal its source.
Yet, as Claire discovers that they both can perceive the hum, she begins to develop a connection with student Kyle.
Together, they join a group of neighbours who claim the sound is a gift for a “chosen few”.
The show, often characterized as both thought-provoking and eerie, delves into themes such as the pursuit of the beyond, the surge of conspiracy theories in Western societies, and the yearning for unity and relationships amidst growing divisions in today’s world.
Additionally, the series features Franc Ashman known for Inside Man, Samuel Edward-Cook of Peaky Blinders fame, Karen Henthorn from Coronation Street, Lucy Sheen who has worked on Ping Pong, and Ian Mercer last seen in All Creatures Great and Small.
In September, a preview for the drama emerged, showcasing close-up shots of Claire while voiceovers from Hall stated: “I never thought my life could disintegrate so thoroughly. It was so insignificant and subtle, barely noticeable. Or maybe I could anticipate it? Maybe that was the issue.
The Listeners will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 9pm on Tuesday 19th November.
