The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story trailer reveals what controversial series has in store

As a film enthusiast with a penchant for true-crime dramas and a knack for spotting the nuances that separate mediocre from masterful storytelling, I find myself intrigued by Netflix’s upcoming offering, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.” Having followed the Menendez case since its sensational debut in the ’90s, my curiosity is piqued by this new adaptation.

Netflix recently unveiled a sneak peek of the initial trailer for the forthcoming drama titled “The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.” This production marks the second installment in the true-crime anthology series, Monsters, following the contentious Dahmer, which debuted in 2022

The show will detail the true story of the two siblings, portrayed by Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch, who received convictions in 1996 for the killings of their parents, José and Kitty Menendez

Despite repeatedly asserting that their behavior was rooted in a lifelong trauma of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse inflicted by their parents, the defense contended that they were motivated by a desire to claim their family’s wealth. Consequently, they were given life imprisonment with no chance for parole

As a captivated viewer, I eagerly anticipate this series that delves deep into the legendary case that swept across the globe, sparking today’s widespread interest in true crime. The question it poses, “Who are the real monsters?”, leaves me pondering and eager to uncover the truth along with the characters on screen

The beginning of the trailer shows Eric and Lyle explaining what happened. They are then told that an essential step is for them to strengthen their brotherly relationship

Lyle retorts: “Eric and I killed our parents together, so I’d say that makes us pretty close.”

The trailer seems to depict them living a luxurious lifestyle following the crime, yet subtly suggests disturbing dreams and unsettling glimpses of the past when their parents (portrayed by Javier Bardem and Chloe Sevigny) were still among us

Meanwhile, there are also glimpses of their arrest and subsequent trial.

At some stage, one of the siblings expresses through narration: “We had one shared existence, and we chose not to endure it any longer.”

Despite garnering significant popularity on Netflix, making it one of their highest-watched series ever, the show titled “Dahmer” was met with considerable controversy over its depiction of the subject and his heinous crimes. This criticism stemmed largely from the disapproval expressed by families of some of his victims

Due to the contentious aspect of the Menendez case and the apprehension it raises among some spectators, there is a sense of uncertainty as to how this tale will unfold onscreen. However, only upon its premiere later this month will we truly know if their concerns are warranted or not

The “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” will debut on Netflix on Thursday, 19th September. To watch this show, you can sign up for Netflix starting at £4.99 per month. Additionally, Netflix is accessible on Sky Glass and Virgin Media Stream as well
