The Many Deaths of Captain America, Ranked

In simpler terms, Captain America stands as Marvel’s symbol of bravery and is highly respected among the Avengers. He consistently risks his life for the team, the world, and occasionally the universe. Given his selfless nature, it’s not surprising that he has numerous significant victories under his belt – even if they often come at a personal cost. The passing of Captain America carries a heavy emotional weight because deep down, he’s just an ordinary man enhanced by the super soldier serum.

Does the super soldier serum ever pose an issue for him? Absolutely. Has he faced long odds all along? Without a doubt. Is he going to keep standing up and battling, despite his unfavorable past performance? You can count on it.

11) Age of Ultron

In the movie “Age of Ultron”, Captain America’s pivotal moments are crucial to the overall atmosphere of the story. Initially, Captain America appears defeated, huddled in a corner alongside other Avengers, searching for any glimmer of hope to push forward. However, his indomitable spirit eventually surfaces, a trait that resurfaces repeatedly in the face of imminent defeat. He mobilizes the team, leads them to the Savage Land and Nick Fury’s hideout. The turning point comes when they decide to journey into the future using Doctor Doom’s time platform. Upon their arrival, Ultron’s drones swiftly eliminate the team, resulting in Captain America losing his life in this initial attack, marking a less-than-stellar performance for him in this event.

10) Fighting Chance

I’ve often maintained that this storyline is equivalent to the “Knightfall” for Captain America in the Marvel Universe, but there’s an issue with that analogy due to the overlap with the Onslaught and Heroes Reborn events. In the narrative, Steve Rogers discovers that his Super Soldier Serum is causing harm to his body and poisoning him. At a certain point, he needs an armor suit just to move, eventually appearing to die and then being followed by a full military funeral with honors. However, this turns out to be another misdirect as the Red Skull takes hold of him and keeps him alive, using him to clone a new body. Therefore, despite the extended storyline that spanned throughout the year, the death is quickly undone and then ultimately erased by the Heroes Reborn reboot.

9) Onslaught/Heroes Reborn

Once more, Cap and other heroes including the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and Doctor Doom give their lives to eliminate Onslaught permanently. As Hulk breaches Onslaught’s psychic form with a single punch, they charge in. Their objective: offer a tangible target for the X-Men to focus on. The X-Men respond, launching attacks and assaults. The story unfolds as “Heroes Reborn,” initiated by Franklin Richards intervening at the critical moment, transporting the heroes to his alternate reality.

In the climax of the Heroes Reborn universe, Captain America perishes multiple times while confronting Galactus. As Doctor Doom repeatedly journeys through time to vanquish Galactus, Cap and the Avengers choose to destroy Earth as a means of retaliation against Galactus. In a later storyline, he passes away off-screen along with the rest of the planet as it’s devoured. Eventually, they manage to succeed on their fourth attempt, mere moments before Richards revives everyone.

8) Secret Wars (Original)

In the original Secret Wars storyline, Rogers, or Captain America, experiences two instances of apparent death. Firstly, when Doctor Doom acquires the powers of the Beyonder, he swiftly eliminates the hero team. However, once the Beyonder reclaims his power, the heroes are revived. Before another quick resurrection, Cap is killed briefly, only to make a comeback on an overpowered Doom. This instance underscores his shared fate with the team, although it remains significant. Despite these consecutive deaths, Captain America never yields his resolve.

7) Universe X

In the alternate world known as Earth X, Steve Rogers no longer dons the Captain America suit; instead, an “A” is etched into his head where it once was. This Steve Rogers is a worn-out version of the original, having faced countless hardships, but he continues to embody the spirit of heroism. He later takes up the battle against a new incarnation of the Skull, many years after his final confrontation with the Red Skull, during which he killed the former Nazi. Following Mar-Vell’s birth at the conclusion of Earth X, he entrusts Captain America to serve as both assistant and protector. Together, they journey across the Marvel universe, gathering powerful artifacts that they intend to utilize in creating a paradise for the departed and vanquishing Death.

Eventually, Captain makes yet another selfless sacrifice for Mar-Vell’s survival, and as a result, he is chosen to join Mar-Vell’s Avenging Host, a group established after Captain defeats Death and establishes Paradise. Indeed, this death of Captain America stands out among the rest due to its unique final resting place.

6) Silver Age Origins

In my critique as a movie-goer, let me remind you that when we first met Captain America, he was believed to be dead after being entombed in an icy prison. This iconic cover where Cap delivers a powerful punch to Adolf Hitler’s face is from the earliest days of his comic book history, during Bucky and The Invaders’ European escapades. Upon being retrieved from the icy depths of the Arctic, his Silver Age origins unfold as he and Bucky attempt to thwart an explosive drone aircraft, only to plunge into the Atlantic until eventually rescued by the Avengers. Though Cap didn’t die in a traditional sense, he was assumed dead until his ice-bound rescue. For all intents and purposes, it counts.

5) Korvac Saga

The Korvac Saga is one of the early events involving the Avengers that was well-received and remains relevant, similar to the Kree-Skrull War and the Celestial Madonna stories from the 1970s. While escaping from the original Guardians of the Galaxy across space and time, before meeting Galactus and obtaining the Power Cosmic, Korvac was a powerful character with stylish shorts and a desire to aid humanity. However, the Avengers were unaware of this secondary aspect, which led to conflicts with Korvac that culminated in him revealing himself at his new residence in Queens, New York. Despite heroic attempts by Wonder Man and Captain America, Korvac killed all the Avengers. In a final act, he brought them back to life and disappeared until reappearing later in Captain America’s own comic series.

4) Wolverine: Revenge

In the gritty storyline of “Wolverine: Revenge”, we find Captain America, Winter Soldier, and Wolverhimself making a fleeting appearance. Magneto has perished, leaving behind an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) that plunges much of the western world into darkness. S.H.I.E.L.D., in a bid to restore power, enlists Logan, Steve Rogers, and James Buchanan Barnes for a critical mission: locating a new energy source. This quest places them squarely against the remnants of the Brotherhood, composed of Sabretooth, Deadpool, Omega Red, Mastermind, and Colossus. Captured and equipped with bombs in their chests, they are given an opportunity to escape if possible. As expected, they fail, leading to the heart-wrenching demise of Captain America and Winter Soldier, leaving behind a poignant echo in the narrative. Despite their tragic end, this series remains a thrilling read.

3) Time Runs Out

In Jonathan Hickman’s final acts within the Marvel Universe before the event known as Secret Wars, Tony Stark found himself trapped in a predicament with no favorable outcome, given the unstoppable Incursions. The questionable choices of the Illuminati, including secretly destroying other planets to halt the Incursions, added to his burden. Moreover, Stark was forced to wipe Captain America’s memory after utilizing the Infinity Gauntlet to obliterate an incursion planet. Rogers ultimately discovered the truth and chose to confront Iron Man with only four minutes remaining before the end, donning armor of his own to force Iron Man into confessing his deceit.

2) Death of Captain America

A clear selection for this segment, “The Demise of Captain America” created quite a stir when it was published following the “Civil War” saga. Post the last battle of superhero “Civil War”, Rogers is slain by Crossbones and a mind-controlled Sharon Carter. The Red Skull orchestrated this, working covertly to potentially shift his consciousness. The surprise element is that Cap wasn’t really gunned down by the Skull’s scheme; instead, Rogers was transported to a specific point in space and time as part of the Red Skull’s mind transfer strategy. He invades Rogers’ mind and appears to contest for control. Eventually, Rogers recovers, but life carries on until Cap is unmasked as a Hydra traitor during the “Secret Empire” narrative.

1) Infinity Gauntlet

Among all Steve Rogers’ deaths portrayed in comics, the one following the Infinity Gauntlet battle stands out as particularly impactful. The aftermath of this epic clash left many heroic figures lifeless, yet it underscored Captain America’s unwavering bravery and relentless spirit. Despite all other Avengers being killed in the struggle against Thanos, Cap remained the last one standing on the battlefield. In his final moments, he bravely faced Thanos and uttered words that will forever resonate.

In this scenario, a character addresses Thanos, saying, “So long as there’s even one person opposing you, Thanos, you won’t achieve ultimate victory.” This individual is buying time until the Silver Surfer arrives. As Captain America defends himself, Thanos breaks his shield and prepares to deliver the finishing blow. However, just in time, the Silver Surfer makes an appearance, narrowly missing Thanos’ gauntlet. Captain America then attempts to fight Thanos, but ultimately succumbs to a backhand after the villain recognizes the true threat. This moment is one of the most iconic for Captain America, despite his demise being compared to being brushed aside like an insect.

Have we overlooked any valiant conclusions or selfless acts? Does it appear that Captain America relishes these interactions excessively? Feel free to share your thoughts below.
