The MCU Failed Ironheart Before the Show Even Premiered (But That Could Change)

The upcoming Disney+ series starring Ironheart is eagerly anticipated as the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, however, some setbacks during its preparatory phase have somewhat dampened its initial excitement before its release. Initially announced in 2020, Ironheart revolves around Riri Williams (played by Dominique Thorne), a brilliant inventor who debuted in the 2022 film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In the movie, Riri’s vibranium detector comes close to revealing the secretive underwater nation of Talokan, leading Namor (Tenoch Huerta) to pursue her. As a result, Shuri (Letitia Wright) and Okoye (Danai Gurira) take Riri under their protection in Wakanda, where she first uses her power suit. During her time there, Riri refines her initial design, creating a new armor for the final battle against Talokan. Inspired by Tony Stark/Iron Man’s (Robert Downey Jr.) technology, Riri makes an intriguing new character within the MCU in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Approximately three years after her time in Wakanda, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will finally delve into Riri’s world as the focus of the upcoming series “Ironheart”. This series is also set to debut new characters like Parker Robbins/The Hood (portrayed by Anthony Ramos), among others. Notably, “Ironheart” is under the supervision of Ryan Coogler, who directed Black Panther and Wakanda Forever. The production of “Ironheart” was completed in 2022, but the MCU has chosen to prioritize other projects since then. However, given the considerable gap in time since Riri’s last appearance, it may be a significant oversight not to release “Ironheart”, as its long-awaited arrival could potentially weaken both the series and the character.

The MCU Has Wasted Riri Williams’ Potential Since Her Debut

It’s been quite disappointing for fans that Riri, or Ironheart as she is known, hasn’t appeared or been mentioned in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) since Wakanda Forever almost three years ago. With more than ten MCU projects released during this period, it’s easy for fans to lose track of Riri while keeping up with the rapidly evolving storylines. The situation is further exacerbated by the fact that Ironheart has received minimal marketing from Marvel Studios, and a trailer was not even released until May 14th, barely a month before its premiere. In contrast, the MCU has been heavily promoting its upcoming movie release, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, since Thunderbolts hit theaters in May. Although it’s common for films to receive more promotion, excluding Ironheart from the excitement surrounding the MCU’s upcoming projects seems unfair to the talented individuals involved in the show.

Ironheart Official Episode Guide Teases the Arrival of One of Marvel’s Best Characters

It seems that Marvel and Disney may not be fully trusting in the quality or viewer appeal of Ironheart, which is unfortunate given the show’s Black female lead and the ongoing racist online hostility it has faced. At the very least, one would expect a sincere attempt to counteract such prejudice. Unfortunately, it appears that Marvel doesn’t consider their upcoming TV series worth the promotional push, leaving less room for advertising and excitement for both Ironheart and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

It’s regrettable that Marvel Studios decided to postpone the release of Ironheart until 2025, a move that appears to indicate they are in a hurry to air the show despite its short six-episode run. This haste is unfortunate because Riri Williams, who has only made one appearance so far, is an intriguing character thanks to her creativity, wit, and stylish armor. Ironheart holds potential for broadening the world around her and delving deeper into her personal development. However, due to Marvel’s delay in airing the series, it may not live up to its full potential, marking another misstep in the MCU’s release schedule since Avengers: Endgame.

Ironheart‘s Success Is More Crucial for the MCU Than You May Believe

Despite the setbacks and slow start that Ironheart has experienced so far, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) can rejuvenate the character’s popularity by capitalizing on the success of the show. If Ironheart manages to develop Riri Williams as a well-rounded character and superhero effectively, it could pave the way for her anticipated role in Marvel’s Young Avengers/Champions series. With a wealth of potential yet still in the nascent stages of her MCU career, Ironheart has the chance to steer Riri on a more promising trajectory.

In order for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to thrive, it’s essential to introduce Ironheart, as this character can help revitalize the Tony Stark/Iron Man aspect of the series. Riri Williams isn’t an exact replica of Iron Man, but she possesses the aptitude to honor his legacy in terms of technological superheroism. It’s also been hinted that Ironheart will have her own AI companion akin to J.A.R.V.I.S., making the comparison to Iron Man even more striking.

Since Iron Man’s demise, the MCU has lacked armored superheroes, and Riri’s significant role in the franchise’s future could help fill this gap.

Ironheart‘s three-episode premiere will drop on Disney+ on Tuesday, June 24th.
