☢ Attention: Upcoming discussions contain plot details from Thunderbolts* and Captain America: Brave New World!
This year has been quite eventful for Bucky Barnes (portrayed by Sebastian Stan). In February, he made an appearance suggesting a run for the U.S. Congress, and surprisingly won the election in May. However, his political career was short-lived as he later left that position to join the New Avengers. Screenwriter Joanna Calo recently shared insights about Bucky’s brief political stint in an interview with Marvel.com. Calo collaborated with Eric Pearson on Thunderbolts* script and is credited for its story. In the interview, she mentioned that it wasn’t challenging to envision people voting for Bucky, even within the tumultuous context of the MCU.
In essence, all our characters grapple with the dilemma of seeking redemption for past wrongs while striving to improve the world, as stated by Calo. Particularly, Bucky struggles to find his place in the world, a struggle that intensifies following an unfortunate event from nearly a century ago. He seems to be perpetually out of sync with time, and this is where we find him among the ranks of Congress.
She continued, “People would likely cast their votes for Bucky Barnes if given the chance! However, he doubts his own abilities and fears they may not be sufficient. I adore the initial scene where he’s unsure how to interact with the reporters. He hasn’t mastered all his moves just yet. I found that endearing.

Calo was new to working on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but her previous work includes writing for the critically-acclaimed Netflix show “Beef” and co-running “The Bear” on Hulu. However, it seems neither Calo nor Pearson were involved in guiding Bucky towards politics, as they didn’t contribute to the story or script of “Captain America: Brave New World”. It’s likely that the five writers credited for that film were following guidance and directions from Marvel Studios producers to interconnect all these narratives.
Bucky’s short stint in Congress within the Marvel Universe has sparked controversy among fans, even though it didn’t significantly affect the storyline. Since Bucky hasn’t actually run for Congress in the comics, some found his involvement in the MCU a tad incongruous. Others felt it was somewhat relatable, as the blending of celebrity and politics isn’t unheard of in today’s real world.
It’s plausible that Bucky’s appealing traits could have been beneficial in a political race; however, one can visualize potential criticisms directed at him. His past as an overseas spy could disqualify him from holding office, and this would undoubtedly cause apprehension among voters and associates regarding security matters. Some spectators of the Marvel Cinematic Universe lamented that more discussions about these controversies were left out, preferring a more detailed exploration of the political narrative instead of its quick resolution.
It appears that Bucky’s time in politics has come to an end, given his full-time role in The New Avengers as depicted in the Thunderbolts post-credit scene of the current film, which continues to be shown in numerous cinemas across the country.
