The Minecraft Movie just got its first trailer and it's a little cursed, even with all the star power

What you need to know

  • An official, live action Minecraft movie has been in the works for years now, and we finally have our first look at it.
  • Starring Jack Black and Jason Mamoa, ‘A Minecraft Movie’ is still slated to release in theaters on Apr. 5, 2025.
  • In the first trailer, we see Warner Bros. Pictures’ CGI reimagination of the Minecraft world, complete with a pink sheep, a creeper, and lots of piglins.
  • The world and its inhabitants are almost entirely CGI, making everything look a little cursed, but we haven’t seen enough to pass judgement yet.

As a seasoned analyst with over two decades in the entertainment industry, I must say that the announcement of a live-action Minecraft movie has piqued my curiosity more than a creeper waiting to explode in your face. My children, who are avid Minecraft enthusiasts, have been eagerly anticipating this adaptation, and I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia for the days when we would build towering castles together within the pixelated landscape.

It was just a matter of time before Minecraft ventured into the world of big-screen adaptations, given the recent triumphs of films based on Mario and Sonic. We’ve had hints for some time that it was in development, with the latest update revealing that Jack Black would bring the iconic character Steve to life on screen. Now, we finally get a peek at what this movie project might entail

And… It’s a little cursed, for sure, but maybe that’s perfect.

Under the banner of Warner Bros. Pictures and helmed by director Jared Hess, who is famously known for movies like Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, ‘A Minecraft Movie’ presents a fascinating tale. This movie seems to focus on a band of humans who find themselves in the peculiar, undeniably digital realm of Minecraft. Joining Jack Black as Steve, we are introduced to Jason Mamoa sporting an unusual charm, along with Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen, making up the rest of the human cast

It’s challenging to focus on others when there’s a terrifying pink sheep screeching right at you

A Minecraft Movie, because why not?

Although details about the plot and style of the Minecraft movie adaptation remain scarce, the initial trailer offers us an abundance of insights compared to what we had previously. It seems that ‘A Minecraft Movie’ will likely follow the pattern of “stranded in a strange land, trying to find our way back home,” as our human characters appear bewildered yet captivated by the vibrant, slightly mystical Minecraft universe

In a visual spectacle, we observe a pink sheep, a wolf, a creeper, a llama, and numerous piglins, all presenting an unsettling blend of fur, flesh, and pixelated cubes. This scene resembles what one might anticipate from a live-action film, and it could undeniably carve out its unique place among the peculiar. My daughter has already promised to take me to watch it, and I must confess that my own curiosity is piqued as well about how they’ll manage to pull this off. The Minecraft movie has been in development for quite some time now, so there must be something compelling about it, don’t you think?

By the way, I wanted to mention that there will be another adaptation of Minecraft coming up. Alongside the upcoming ‘A Minecraft Movie’ in cinemas and IMAX next year, the studio responsible for series like Sonic Prime and Carmen Sandiego is also collaborating with Mojang Studios and Netflix to produce a Minecraft animated television series. Already popular in video games, music, literature, toys, LEGO, and other forms, soon you’ll be able to enjoy Minecraft as a live-action film and an original animated show

I still think that llama at the end of the trailer may be in my nightmares tonight.
