As a movie reviewer with a deep appreciation for war films and a soft spot for British productions, I was thrilled to witness the energetic and action-packed spectacle that is “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.” Based on Damian Lewis’s book about WWII Special Forces, this film is a compelling companion piece to Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglorious Bastards,” sharing an undeniable kinship in their unapologetic portrayal of wartime brutality.
According to declassified documents, Damian Lewis’s book “Churchill’s Secret Warriors: The Real Story of the Unorthodox Heroes of WWII” has been turned into the film “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.” This production can be viewed as a British counterpart to Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglorious Bastards,” particularly in relation to Brad Pitt’s Aldo Raine’s famous line, “We will only be doing one thing …eliminating Nazis!”
Henry Cavill portrays Gus March Phillips, a character with a strong anti-authoritarian stance, having spent time in military prison. Now free and tasked by Churchill, Phillips leads a clandestine team on a perilous mission: eliminating U-boats obstructing British supplies at a West African harbor. These submarines enable unobstructed US passage through the Atlantic. This film centers around a group of men on a mission, with the destruction of Nazis adding to the intense atmosphere – almost reminiscent of playing Call of Duty on an easy setting. The team’s initial objective is to save a crucial team member during Operation Postmaster.
In an exhilarating turn of events, Cavill heads an impressive ensemble featuring Alan Ritchson, Alex Pettyfer, and Henry Golding as teammates. Notably, a youthful Ian Fleming is part of the governmental bodies, providing inspiration for Cavill’s character that later became James Bond. Guy Ritchie directs this thrilling war film, marking his second in this genre following “The Covenant” in 2023. Unfortunately, outside of its US theatrical debut, this riveting production has been made available primarily through streaming services.
In the fashion of many superior films by Richie, this production brims with contagious excitement. The actors seem to relish their roles, portraying intense energy during the action scenes, which include archery stunts, stabbing, and explosions. With a Boys’ Own spirit, the script offers an entertainingly violent tale, reminiscent of Tarantino but less complex. This makes for an enjoyable watch on a lazy Sunday afternoon following an extravagant lunch.
