Initially, the series continued, however, it began to experience a decline in popularity following multiple seasons. As the young characters grew up, the producers decided to incorporate a fresh character into the storyline. However, the cast believes that this move marked the point where the show took an unexpected and less successful turn, much like when a TV show introduces an absurd or implausible plot twist.
Recently, some cast members of the popular TV show “The Brady Bunch” came together for a discussion at The Chocolate Expo held at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. Attendees included Christopher Knight, Barry Williams, Mike Lookinland, and Susan Olsen. During this fan Q&A session, one person inquired about the mysterious character of Cousin Oliver.
In response, Olsen said, “Our shark doesn’t swim, it leaps.” Every time a TV show begins to dip slightly in ratings, they tend to introduce more shark-related scenes.
Knight concurred, adding, “We were getting a little old for the premise of the show.”
In my movie-watching experience, I found myself on the brink of slipping out when suddenly, Oliver made an entrance through the main doors.
I agree with you,” replied Olsen, “and I did have feelings for him. However, I didn’t want my journey through adolescence to be played out on television, and that includes Robbie Rist, whom I admire.
In the fifth season of “The Brady Bunch,” a new character named Cousin Oliver made an appearance. This role was played by Rist, who was Carol’s nephew and joined the Brady family when his parents left for a trip to South America. Despite Cousin Oliver’s arrival, the show’s popularity continued to wane, eventually leading to its cancellation after only six episodes featuring him.
It Wasn’t Robbie Rist’s Fault the Character Wasn’t Well-Received
Williams stated during the panel that it’s important to clarify that Rob Rist, contrary to some assumptions, is not cousin Oliver. Instead, he’s a fantastic individual. To set the record straight, it wasn’t Rist who was at fault in this case. In fact, we all appreciate him and have enjoyed working with him. He was part of our Lifetime TV movie, Blending Families, and our Christmas movie, as well as a guest on my podcast. We had a great time together and got along splendidly.
However, Williams emphasized, “But Oliver was not a Brady.”
Knight implied that Williams may have disliked Robbie Rist from the beginning due to some personal issues or misgivings. He explained, “Perhaps because Robbie joined the show as Cousin Oliver, Barry wasn’t initially fond of him. It could be that, being older and perhaps more aware of the implications, he didn’t appreciate his presence on our set. However, their relationship has improved since then.
The Brady Bunch is streaming on Paramount+, and it’s also available to watch for free on Pluto TV.
