As a seasoned horror enthusiast who has braved countless haunted houses and virtual nightmares, I can confidently say that The Mortuary Assistant is a chilling masterpiece that deserves a spot in every horror aficionado’s gaming library. This game had me jumping out of my seat more times than I care to admit, leaving me with goosebumps and a newfound appreciation for the quiet stillness of a real-life mortuary.
I’ve had my share of horror gaming experiences, and I consider myself quite hard to scare these days. However, I must admit that The Mortuary Assistant stands out as one of the scariest games I’ve encountered in a while. It may not offer a flawless gameplay experience, and there are instances where it seems hindered by control, visual, and similar issues. Nevertheless, if you’re looking for a chilling experience, this game is more than capable of giving you a serious fright.
In “The Mortuary Assistant,” you assume the role of Rebecca, a determined young woman who secures employment at the eerie River Fields Mortuary, despite its chilling reputation and local rumors. Initially, she believes this to be just another ordinary job. However, things take a darker turn when her boss imprisons her within the mortuary at night, claiming that an ominous entity haunts the premises and has targeted Rebecca. As the nights pass, she must continue her work, identify the nature of the tormenting demon, and find a way to exorcise it before it completely overpowers her soul.
“Does ‘The Mortuary Assistant’ offer an immaculate gaming experience? No, it doesn’t. Does it sometimes encounter problems with controls, graphics, and other aspects? Yes, it does. However, is it capable of giving you a terrifying experience? It seems quite probable that it will indeed scare you significantly.”
In simple terms, the fundamental concept of this tale is simple yet multifaceted enough to keep it intriguing from various angles. From a storytelling viewpoint, “The Mortuary Assistant” weaves together numerous subplots to maintain interest, such as the enigmatic history of the mortuary, Rebecca’s harrowing past and its impact on the terrors she now encounters, and the ever-present unease generated by the looming menace of supernatural presence. The game effectively disperses new information at a steady pace, making it enjoyable to piece together details about Rebecca’s background or the mortuary’s mysterious past.
The main appeal of “The Mortuary Assistant” isn’t its plot; instead, it’s the chilling terror it delivers. From soft, eerie sounds like whispers or doors slamming to quick glimpses of shadowy figures in the corners of your vision, the game begins subtly. However, as you advance, the horror escalates dramatically, veering into genuinely malicious territory.
In The Mortuary Assistant, you’ll encounter various terrifying creatures and unsettling sights throughout diverse environments. You might stumble upon eerie text in unusual places, or witness corpses suddenly rising to shamble about – these are just a few examples of the numerous frightening elements this game offers (many of which are fresh additions introduced with this definitive edition re-release). Notably, most of these scares are genuinely chilling, and the game does an impressive job of rarely allowing you to feel secure or prepared for the horrors that may lie ahead. However, it’s worth mentioning that some scares can occasionally repeat, which might diminish their effectiveness – a potential issue given that this is a game designed for multiple playthroughs.
“In this game, The Mortuary Assistant, terrifying creatures might appear unexpectedly in the surroundings, you may find eerie messages scattered about, and sometimes corpses will rise to lumber along – it’s packed with various types of frightening moments.”
However, unlike a typical walk-through horror simulation, The Mortuary Assistant offers a unique gaming experience. What truly distinguishes it from other indie horror games is its innovative gameplay design. In this game, you assume the role of an assistant at a mortuary, where you’ll find yourself performing tasks such as removing bodies from cold storage and embalming them – a task that, given its nature, can be quite unsettling, considering your active participation throughout the process. Simultaneously, you are also charged with identifying the type of demon tormenting you (which shares some similarities with the multiplayer indie horror sensation Phasmaphobia).
Both of these complex procedures require a high level of expertise and precision. For instance, embalming a body involves a series of steps that take you through various areas of the facility as you work with diverse equipment and items, including examining physical signs on the body, draining blood, sewing jaws shut, and more. Similarly, investigating and identifying the supernatural entity tormenting you is equally intricate and technical. Ensuring every step is correct in this process is always crucial. The complexity of Rebecca’s work, the careful attention needed to discern the haunting demon, and the game’s skill at escalating scares create an intense atmosphere that heightens the gaming experience. At every turn, The Mortuary Assistant is attempting to throw you off balance under its overwhelming tension.
As a passionate fan, I must admit that while the game offers an engaging experience, its control system leaves much to be desired. Having only played it on a console, I can’t help but wonder if playing on PC with a mouse and keyboard would have made things smoother. The controls, especially basic movements and camera adjustments, often feel cumbersome and imprecise. This inconvenience extends to tasks like picking up and using objects, which are frequent in the game, and interacting with environmental elements.
“As a fellow enthusiast, if you’re seeking an immersive experience that will truly send shivers down your spine and provide captivating gameplay, despite some acknowledged flaws, I strongly recommend giving it a closer look.”
In terms of appearance and sound, The Mortuary Assistant game presents fairly well, considering its indie status. However, it has some technical flaws that are hard to ignore. These range from blurry textures, jerky animations, audio glitches, and other problems. Despite the game’s strong points, these issues can somewhat diminish the overall experience.
Two years ago, the PC version of “The Mortuary Assistant” was launched, and though it didn’t instantly become a household name, it managed to pique the interest of many gamers. With its console release, we hope it will find even wider success. Despite some technical issues and control hiccups that can make gameplay feel a bit awkward at times, “The Mortuary Assistant” is essentially a great horror game. If you’re seeking a game capable of truly scaring you while offering engaging gameplay, despite its flaws, it’s definitely worth checking out.
