Currently, Damien Leone is working on the production of “Terrifier 4,” which he considers as the final installment of the series. In a recent episode of the podcast “Inside Of You” with Michael Rosenbaum, he reminisced about the franchise’s history. During the conversation, the host inquired about the most challenging scene to produce in the films, to which Leone pointed out the bedroom sequence from “Terrifier 2.” He went on to describe how it almost turned into a disappointing mess.

It appears we began recording without having all the special effects ready, and I recall shooting that crucial scene – it was meant to be the climactic moment in the film, the pivotal kill sequence. The first film, known for its infamous hacksaw scene, set a high bar, so I knew we needed to either match or surpass that level of coolness.

If you’re familiar with the “Terrifier” films, it’s likely you recall the specific sequence we’re referring to. For those who haven’t seen it, here’s a description from the second movie: Art The Clown, played by David Howard Thornton, invades a teenager’s (Casey Hartnett) home and pursues her up to her bedroom. In a brutal turn of events, he slashes her face, scalps her with scissors, cuts open her back, tears off one arm, and then splits the other in half. It’s a very graphic scene, and the original versions reportedly didn’t have the desired impact at all.

Initially, filmmaker Damien Leone aimed to surpass the shocking scene in “Terrifier” featuring a woman being split in half lengthwise with a hacksaw. However, problems that surfaced during production placed this plan at risk. He further explained…

In the process of creating Part 2, there were numerous obstacles. I attempted to bring on a makeup team for assistance, but they backed out at the last minute. With everyone prepared to begin filming, we were forced to dive in without proper preparation. Consequently, when we reached that specific scene, we were ill-prepared and I vividly recall feeling disheartened as it unfolded.

Beyond his roles in writing, directing, producing, and editing, Damien Leone is also recognized for the creation of practical effects and makeup for the movie All Hallows Eve (the film that debuted Art The Clown) as well as the first two Terrifier films. However, his initial attempts at the bedroom scene in Terrifier 2 didn’t meet his own expectations. Reflecting on set, he recounts the experience by saying:

“For the bedroom scene in Terrifier 2, my first tries didn’t live up to what I aimed for.

I’ve noticed that none of the effects are delivering as intended, so I approached my producer, along with a few others, expressing our concerns. We aren’t panicking, but we’re voicing that we might need to re-shoot some scenes and reassess the situation because it doesn’t meet our quality standards.

Without a doubt, viewers are well aware that this tale concludes on a positive note. The unconventional finale of the bedroom sequence in “Terrifier 2” gained notoriety for being so grotesque and terrifying that it caused audiences to vomit in cinemas. This infamy sparked interest among moviegoers eager to undergo a cinematic endurance trial, leading to a film with an estimated budget of $250,000 earning an impressive $15.7 million during its theatrical release.

In the autumn of last year, Terrifier 3 achieved even greater success, and now, development is underway for Terrifier 4, set to conclude the gory series by shedding light on Art The Clown’s past.
