The Mouse Trap – TRAILER

As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of film-watching under my belt, I must say that the trailer for “The Mouse Trap” has piqued my interest. The idea of Mickey Mouse, a character I grew up with and hold dear, taking on a sinister role in a slasher flick is an intriguing twist, to say the least.

On January 1, 2024, “Steamboat Willie,” the groundbreaking 1928 short film featuring Mickey Mouse and kickstarting the Disney empire, entered the public domain. It didn’t take long before the first trailer utilizing this classic character, titled “The Mouse Trap” (originally known as “Mickey’s Mouse Trap”), was released.

As a seasoned movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersing myself in various genres, I must say that this plot for the upcoming film strikes me as both intriguing and potentially quite chilling. The story seems to draw from classic tropes of the horror genre while introducing an original twist with the use of a beloved children’s character as the antagonist.

In a traditional twist, the slasher in this film dons a Mickey Mouse mask and a hockey jersey, picking off a group of teens one by one. The script appears to wink at the horror genre’s conventions, hinting at a self-aware nod similar to Scream. Directed by Jamie Bailey, he stated, “We aimed to have some fun with it all. I mean, imagine Steamboat Willie’s Mickey Mouse killing people! It’s ludicrous, but we embraced the absurdity and enjoyed every moment of it. And I think that enthusiasm shines through.”

In the movie, you’ll find actresses like Sophie McIntosh, Allegra Nocita, and Mackenzie Mills, along with actors such as Callum Sywyk, Ben Harris, Damir Kovic, Nick Biskupek, and Simon Phillips.

Is it possible that more Mickey Mouse films will be produced? Disney has made it clear that elements such as Mickey’s voice, gloves, smile, trousers, etc., are still under their copyright, which suggests it’s unlikely. Following last year’s release of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey and its sequel, Piglet will enter the public domain this year too.

THE MOUSE TRAP will be released on digital platforms and DVD on 30th September
