It’s unusual, almost unheard of, for a TV series to be canceled and then reimagined as a movie that achieves great success. However, this is exactly what happened to Police Squad when it transformed into The Naked Gun, significantly altering the trajectory of Leslie Nielsen’s career permanently. This remake might have a similar impact on Liam Neeson, who has been predominantly involved in action films for the past two decades and is now venturing into comedy (take a look at his improvisation skills showcased in Ricky Gervais’ ‘Life’s Too Short’). In the action-packed film, The Naked Gun, Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., portrayed by Liam Neeson, inherits his father’s unique talents to guide Police Squad and safeguard the world! This movie is helmed by director Akiva Schaffer, known for Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, and produced by Seth MacFarlane, creator of Ted and Family Guy.
In this production, we have actress Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, Eddie Yu, and Danny Huston joining the team.
The 1988 movie, produced on a limited budget, managed to gross $78 million at the box office. This relatively small success sparked a sequel in 1991 that earned $86 million, leading to another film in 1994 titled “The Final Insult.” By this point, the humor was becoming repetitive, and the movie made $51 million. Despite its decreasing box office earnings, Nielsen became a comic legend due to his invention of a hidden farting device, which caused disruption during interviews. Nielsen passed away in 2010 at the age of 84, but his comedic legacy continues.
