It’s unusual, even unprecedented, for a TV series to be canceled, then transformed into a movie and achieve tremendous success. However, this is precisely what happened to Police Squad when it morphed into The Naked Gun, significantly altering Leslie Nielsen’s career trajectory forever. Maybe this reboot will have a similar impact on Liam Neeson, who has been predominantly making action films for the past two decades and is now venturing into comedy (check out his improv skills in Ricky Gervais’ ‘Life’s too Short’) with the release of The Naked Gun’s trailer.
In the comedy film “The Naked Gun,” Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., portrayed by Liam Neeson, inherits his father’s unique abilities to command Police Squad and save the world! The movie is helmed by director Akiva Schaffer, known for “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping,” and produced by Seth MacFarlane, famous for “Ted” and “Family Guy.
In this production, we have actors such as Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, Eddie Yu, and Danny Huston joining the team.
The 1988 movie, despite having a limited budget, managed to gross $78 million. This modest success spurred a sequel in 1991 which earned $86 million, leading to another film in 1994 titled “The Final Insult.” By this point, the humor was starting to run thin, as evidenced by its earnings of $51 million. Nevertheless, Nielsen became a legendary comedian and a regular on talk shows thanks to his hidden flatulence device that disrupted interviews. Nielsen passed away in 2010 at the age of 84, but his legend continues to thrive.
