Ahoy there, fellow fans of all things eerie and enchanting! As someone who has been following the tales of Tim Burton’s creations since the days when the original Nightmare Before Christmas hit the silver screen, let me tell you, this latest announcement is music to my ears (or should I say eyes?).

A while back, over five years ago, TOKYOPOP published a manga adaptation of ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas‘ that has been cherished by many. Originally released in black and white, this Disney Manga version of the 1993 stop-motion animated film by Tim Burton is now being reprinted with a color edition. The paperback contains 176 pages, with the manga beautifully colored by Jun Asuka (Disney Fairies: The Petite Fairy’s Diary), and features new cover artwork by Manuel Puppo (Marvel’s Voices).

In a twist of events, Jack Skellington, the sovereign of Halloween Town and lord of all things eerie, yearns for a change from his existence shrouded in darkness. One fateful day, he discovers Christmas Town and seizes this opportunity to experiment with a fresh holiday, envisioning a chilling Christmas celebration that would echo “Scary Christmas” worldwide. However, Sally, the young doll made of patches, attempts to deter him, while Oogie Boogie lurks menacingly, waiting for his chance to seize Halloween Town in Jack’s temporary absence. If he wants to put his plan into action by December 25th, Jack must act swiftly!

For the first time in color, you can now get your hands on the sequel series of Zero’s Journey, initially published as a 20-chapter storyline in 2018. In Halloween Town, Jack Skellington reigns supreme as the Pumpkin King, devising the scariest spectacles. By his side at all times is his loyal ghostly companion, Zero, who faithfully accompanies him in every innovative frightening idea. When Zero strayed into a strange realm filled with pastries, wrapped gifts, evergreen trees, and Christmas carols, he had to navigate this new territory of Christmas Town to return home!

In addition to releasing the movie’s manga version, TOKYOPOP also published a precursor comic book titled “The Nightmare Before Christmas: The Struggle for the Pumpkin King“, and a five-part comic book series called “The Nightmare Before Christmas – Reflection of the Moon“, centered around Sally.

Under the direction of Henry Selick (similar to Coraline), and with its origins in the poem by Tim Burton (akin to Beetlejuice), this animated musical narrates the tale of Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King, voiced by Chris Sarandon. Jack, weary of his routine of scaring and screaming, aspires to share Christmas cheer instead. However, his endeavor to bring joy threatens Santa Claus and causes distress for well-behaved children worldwide.

In a unique blend of spooky Halloween and jolly Christmas, I stumbled upon a movie that Selick calls a “mix-up” and an unavoidable clash. This film finally put an end to a long-standing dispute. The characters it introduced were downright chilling yet fun: doll-faced Sally (Catherine O’Hara), the two-faced Mayor (Glenn Shadix), mad scientist Dr. Finkelstein (William Hickey), and the mischievous trio of Lock (Paul Reubens), Shock (O’Hara), and Barrel (Danny Elfman). These were Halloween’s most cunning trick-or-treaters, who daringly captured Santa for Oogie Boogie (Ken Page).
