As a dedicated fan of The OA, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of longing for the unanswered questions and intriguing storyline that was left hanging when the series was abruptly cancelled by Netflix in 2019. Brandon Perea, who played one of the pivotal roles in the show, shares my sentiments and expresses his unwavering belief that creators Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij will eventually find a way to bring the story to a satisfying conclusion.
In 2019, Netflix made a notable move by cancelling “The OA.” The series, known for its dedicated fanbase, left many unanswered questions, making it one of the cancelled Netflix shows that fans persistently campaign to revive. Brandon Perea, who starred in the show, remains hopeful about the project’s future despite his involvement in other notable productions like “Nope” and “Twisters.” Creators Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij are also believed to find a way to wrap up the storyline eventually.
When The Hollywood Reporter inquired if he was taken aback that the creators are still aiming for a conclusion, Perea replied, “Absolutely not. I’ve become accustomed to this. I believe the story isn’t finished yet. Though I don’t know how they plan to proceed, I remain prepared and open to rejoin The OA whenever it makes its return.”
“He added, ‘It seems like there are some unfinished business that need to be wrapped up. Zal is particularly confident about this, not just hopeful but certain. His conviction gives me faith as well, making me believe that we will indeed complete the task. I share their optimism and am not taken aback by it in the least. Those two are true warriors. The challenges we faced during the shoot and how we managed to pull through – I hold them in high regard.'”
Last year, during talks about the potential future of the series, co-creator Batmanglij revealed that Netflix proposed creating a film to conclude various storylines. However, given that three more seasons were in the works, the team decided against making a movie to prevent compressing extensive narrative elements.
As a gamer, I was taken aback by the unexpected ending of “The OA” series. But the creators tried to tie up loose ends with a movie instead of a third season, which wasn’t what we wanted. So, I didn’t feel disappointed; rather, I was left puzzled. If Netflix had finished the story with a third season, they could have wrapped up all remaining plots and closed the chapter. This would allow them to sell or license the completed series for potential revenue for the next decade or so. Instead, we’re left with unfinished stories on their platform. From a gamer’s perspective, I don’t see the benefit of keeping incomplete works. It’s much more satisfying to have a completed game or story and then monetize it through licensing deals.
He explained, “We didn’t hold grudges and viewed Darby’s arrival as a fresh start, as Brit put it, with a clear beginning, middle, and end. We might have been unknowingly guarding ourselves. However, with the trend of limited series giving way to ongoing ones – like ‘Big Little Lies’ and ‘True Detective’ – it makes sense to complete a story in each season.”
Stay tuned for possible updates on The OA.
