The Office Spinoff Gets First Look and Official Title (And Reveals a Returning Star)

At last, NBC has officially named the spin-off of “The Office”. This much-anticipated follow-up to the beloved NBC sitcom has been under development for some time now. Here’s what we’ve learned so far: Greg Daniels is back as the showrunner and executive producer, along with Michael Koman from “Nathan For You”. The main cast members are Domhnall Gleeson, known for films like “About Time” and “Ex-Machina”, and Sabrina Impacciatore, who starred in “The White Lotus”. NBC has provided more details, disclosing that the spinoff will be called “The Paper”, and they’ve even released a first look image of its cast. This image features a returning character from “The Office”.

During NBCUniversal’s presentation on Monday, announcements were made for “The Paper,” where Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore were joined by Oscar Nuñez, reprising his role as Oscar Martinez from “The Office.” The initial snapshot of “The Paper” is taken from the pilot episode, showing Gleeson’s character addressing his coworkers while standing on a table. In the background, you can spot Oscar’s character. The crew in “The Paper” is similar to the one that documented Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch in “The Office.” They are seeking a new subject and stumble upon an old Toledo newspaper, The Truth Teller, along with its enthusiastic publisher, played by Domhnall Gleeson. The team aims to revive this historic newspaper.

Núñez disclosed that he had discussions with Greg Daniels, proposing an alternate scenario for Oscar’s life post-“The Office.” Instead of staying put in Scranton, it was suggested that Oscar would relocate to a more diverse and vibrant location after the series ended.

According to Nunez, Greg listened and relocated Oscar to Toledo, a city with three times the population of Scranton. It’s reassuring to know that one’s voice can make a difference like this.

The story revolves around a struggling Midwestern newspaper, once grand but now greatly diminished from its past glory. Many plotlines focus on Domhnall Gleeson’s character attempting to revive this paper. Due to financial constraints, he can’t afford to hire reporters; instead, he relies on the existing staff, who are untrained and unsure of their roles. Daniels explained this to THR during an Office oral history discussion. The concept is intriguing because it explores the rich history of local newspapers. In this narrative, the antagonist is the internet, with its easy access to free news for everyone, leading ad revenue to companies like Google.

Although actor Oscar Nuñez appears eager to rejoin the cast of “The Paper“, lead star Steve Carell from the original “The Office” series has hinted that he won’t make a personal appearance in any special episodes. Instead, he plans to watch the spinoff from afar.

At the premiere of his latest film, “IF,” Carell informed THR that he will be observing but won’t make an appearance. He explained, “My character has no need to attend something like that as it’s a fresh venture with no particular reason for him to show up.

He expressed his enthusiasm, stating that it seemed like an intriguing concept. “The story seems to take place in a struggling news organization,” he continued. “I had the privilege of collaborating with Domhnall Gleeson, who is one of the main actors. I worked with him on ‘The Patient,’ and he’s both talented and genuinely kind. So I have high expectations for this project.

In addition to the lead role, “The Paper” features Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, and Tim Key. Duane Shepard Sr., Allan Havey, Nate Jackson, Mo Welch, Nancy Lenehan, Molly Ephraim, and Tracy Letts will appear as guest stars. The series is set to premiere on NBC in September.
