1886 for PlayStation 4, but Sony declined the opportunity for them to develop it. During an interview with MinnMax on YouTube, Pessino expressed his opinion that Sony may not have approved another game due to the negative reviews The Order: 1886 received when it was first released.
As a devoted fan, I believe it wasn’t the sales figures that were the issue, but rather the critical reception. Sony, being a group of which I am proud, values high praise, and if the critical response had even been in the 70s on the review scale, I am convinced we would have seen a sequel. Just a handful more positive points, and it would have been acceptable.
In 2015 when The Order: 1886 was released, it received a Metacritic score of 63 and a 6.8 user score based on over 4,000 reviews, which is quite similar. Our review for The Order: 1886 on PS4 echoed the general consensus with a score of 6/10. We found that while the presentation was impressive from start to finish, some poor design choices took away from its otherwise top-notch quality. Although the developers created an amazing universe, they didn’t make much use of it beyond the main characters.
Interestingly, we suggested that the initial game was “crying out for a sequel to truly tap its obvious potential”, which Pessino stated could have been released by 2018 if Sony had approved it from Ready at Dawn. This hypothetical sequel would have featured both multiplayer and a cinematic single-player mode.
Pessino stated that the internal mock reviews for the game were much better than the reviews critics gave when it was first released, and since there was a strict deadline of February 20th, 2015, Ready at Dawn didn’t have enough time to make the title perfect. Essentially, they felt they needed an additional year to polish the game, but that extra time wasn’t granted, so they had to trim down certain aspects, saying “cut, cut, cut.
Originally, The Order: 1886 was intended to have a more interactive gameplay experience with intricate narrative elements. However, due to extensive cuts and changes, many subtle story aspects got overlooked, transforming what should have been interactive moments into a film-like presentation. This seems to be one of the main criticisms of the game, suggesting that its cinematic focus overshadowed the importance of engaging gameplay.
