It appears that Ready at Dawn’s last significant exclusive PlayStation title, The Order: 1886, may have had a prospective follow-up in development. However, as per studio co-founder and developer Andrea Pessino, Sony declined the sequel due to the game receiving mixed reviews from critics.
In a conversation with MinnMax, Pessino discussed that Ready at Dawn had proposed a follow-up to The Order: 1886, which he referred to as an exceptional sequel. Regrettably, Sony declined this proposal, using the term “Ready at Dawn may have sealed our fate” when referring to their agreement on the sequel.
Pessino stated, “The sequel would’ve been amazing, I guarantee it! We proposed the idea to Sony, regardless of the reviews, and in hindsight, it was probably for the best that they declined. If we thought we were in trouble before, with the sequel, we might as well have sold our souls!
As a devoted fan, I’m sharing some intriguing insights about Ready at Dawn’s partnership with Sony. Given that The Order: 1886 was poised to be a groundbreaking visual achievement for the PS4, Sony set certain milestones to be achieved. Unfortunately, when the studio needed to focus on different aspects of the game, these milestones weren’t met, resulting in unpaid installments. Consequently, taking on a sequel would have only worsened the studio’s predicament at that time.
Pessino stated that they were planning on doing it mainly for the sake of giving it to the players, but if the budget was tight, they would have found themselves utterly dependent on any decisions made, as they possessed absolutely no bargaining power.
Under the circumstances, we lacked the leverage to strike a fair deal; they essentially held all the cards. Still, we were eager to take it as an opportunity to restore the franchise’s reputation. I assure you, the foundation work was exceptional – truly promising. What was required was simply more development.
Originally launched in 2015, The Order: 1886 received mixed reviews due to its short playtime and limited player interaction. However, the game’s intriguing narrative left many hanging on a cliffhanger. As early as 2016, the creative director Ru Weerasuriya hinted at the possibility of a sequel.
It’s interesting to note that at the end of the last decade, whispers began circulating about a possible PS5-exclusive sequel for The Order: 1886. Yet, after five years, there hasn’t been much additional information released regarding this game.
Following their work on the game “The Order: 1886“, Ready at Dawn collaborated with Meta to put out a series of VR games. The studio’s subsequent hit VR title, “Lone Echo“, led to its acquisition by Meta. Consequently, they released “Lone Echo 2“. Regrettably, the studio was closed down last year.
