The Order: 1886 Sequels Would Have Featured Multiplayer, Larger-Scaled Battles

Originally launched in 2015 exclusively on PS4, “The Order: 1886” was a single-player game. As stated by creative director Ru Weerasuriya, plans for a sequel to the third-person shooter would have expanded the game significantly, encompassing larger battles and potentially multiplayer modes. In an interview with Julien Chieze, Weerasuriya revealed that multiplayer had initially been planned for “The Order: 1886”, but was later abandoned in favor of incorporating it into a potential sequel, as reported by VGC.

As per Weerasuriya, a comprehensive pitch spanning ten pages was crafted for potential sequels to “The Order: 1886”. These sequels were proposed to include massive battles and multiplayer options. The initial plan included two sequels: “The Order 1891” and “The Order 1899”. Weerasuriya had already outlined the narrative for what would have been a trilogy. Additionally, there were plans to extend the franchise into the future, with a script also prepared for a tale set within the series during the 20th century.

It’s worth mentioning that despite initial hopes, no sequels to The Order: 1886 were ever produced. Back in February, co-founder of the development studio Ready at Dawn, Andrea Pessino, shared that Sony declined proposals due to the game’s mixed critical reviews. Even though a sequel was turned down, Pessino acknowledged that it might have been detrimental for the studio, as it would have required them to commit long-term to the project, essentially “signing their lives away” with Ready at Dawn.

Pessino commented, ‘The sequel we proposed would have been amazing, take my word for it.’ We presented the idea to Sony regardless of the reviews, and in a sense, it’s good they declined because if we thought we were in trouble before, with the sequel, we might as well have sold our souls.

As a die-hard fan, I can share some insights from Pessino about the development journey of The Order: 1886 by Ready at Dawn. It seems they faced quite a few hurdles during this process, with delayed milestones causing issues that included missed payments. This predicament arose due to their assignment to work on various aspects of the game rather than the initially planned focus, all in an effort to make The Order one of the standout visual achievements for the PS4. Pessino also hinted at a possible sequel having a more modest budget, given the lessons learned from the first game’s development.

Pessino mentioned that the initial plan was to carry out the action solely for the sake of giving it to the players. However, he admitted that if they had gone ahead with it, they would have been in a precarious position due to a tight budget, as they would have had no negotiating power or control over decisions and events whatsoever.

Under the circumstances, we found ourselves unable to secure a fair deal; they had significant leverage. Nonetheless, we were eager to accept it as it presented an opportunity to rehabilitate our franchise. I assure you, the foundation was solid and promising; it merely required further development.
