The 2023 Writers Guild of America work stoppage, lasting a remarkable 148 days, ranked as the second-longest in their union’s history. Spanning from May 2 to September 27, 2023, writers in Hollywood went on strike due to disagreements with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) concerning salary increases, fair royalties, mandatory writer employment, and safeguards against AI threats. This labor action significantly affected numerous popular television series, such as “Abbott Elementary,” “Stranger Things,” “Saturday Night Live,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Severance,” “Hacks,” and “The Orville.
The final episode of the TV series “The Orville” aired on August 4, 2022, nearly nine months before the significant WGA strikes. Created by Seth MacFarlane, who contributed a total of $6 million to the Entertainment Community Fund during the strikes, “The Orville” is a humorous yet emotional parody of “Star Trek”, set 400 years in the future. The series follows a starship crew, including both humans and aliens, as they journey through the Milky Way galaxy aboard the U.S.S. Orville. In this show, Seth MacFarlane portrays Captain Ed Mercer, while Adrianne Palicki plays his former wife and second-in-command, Commander Kelly Grayson.
Prior to the Dallas International Film Festival premiere of Austin Nichols’ directorial debut, “The Salamander King“, MovieWeb interviewed Palicki about the possibility of reprising her role in a potential fourth season of “The Orville“. “That could be a discussion,” she started, appearing careful with her words, as speculation about its cancellation has been circulating for some time.
Adrianne Palicki Notes Discussing an ‘Orville’ Season 4 Return Prior to the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA Strikes
Palicki clarified, “Yes, prior to the announcement of the strikes, Seth and I had indeed discussed the possibility of me being involved. He asked if I would take part, and it was an option on the table. However, when the strikes occurred, it seemed to fade away. I understand that many fans are disappointed, but as things stand, I’m unsure if there will be a fourth season.
In January 2024, MacFarlane hinted to Collider about The Orville, stating that it’s not definitively finished as of yet, implying there might still be more episodes to come. Then, in August 2024, a glimmer of hope surfaced when Scott Grimes, the actor portraying Lieutenant Gordon Malloy, announced at Star Trek Las Vegas that they would start pre-production for Season 4 of The Orville in early 2025. This positive statement was part of Grimes’ performance at the event.
Despite the fact that “early 2025” seems to have passed by, and given that pre-production would likely have started if it was underway, it appears this starship has sailed. Regardless, enthusiasts and novices can relish in all three seasons of The Orville on Hulu.
