It appears that developer Obsidian Entertainment has taken notice of some criticism leveled at the writing in their game, The Outer Worlds. Initially, the game was criticized for its excessive use of humor despite its generally dark atmosphere. In an interview with PCGamer, the director of The Outer Worlds 2, Brandon Adler, admitted that the original game’s writing and comedic approach might have been too one-dimensional at times.
In his discussion about The Outer Worlds 2, Adler expressed his desire to introduce more diversity in the game’s writing. He wants to ensure that players encounter fresh material to prevent a feeling of repetition, such as “We’re just going through the same old jokes, the same kind of content, the same themes over and over again.
In simpler terms, it’s been shared that in The Outer Worlds 2, there will be less absurdity for players to find, and the overall mood is expected to be more somber than the first game. This shift is primarily due to Leonard Boyarsky, who was a co-creative director on The Outer Wilds with Fallout creator Tim Cain, now serving as the sole creative director for the sequel.
Adler mentioned that there’s a subtle shift towards a less humorous, more somber mood. He attributes this to Leonard as his style tends to lean in that direction. Consequently, he exerts a stronger influence over the storyline, giving it a darker interpretation of the events.
For those players who may worry that The Outer Worlds 2 could become excessively grim and somber, Adler reassured us that there will remain a good deal of humor woven throughout the new game.
Adler clarified that while they aimed to maintain the same essence as before, the interactions between players and various factions would showcase an unusual humor. He added, “We’re striving for something less playful and significantly more absurd.
