In a conversation with Deadline, the executive producer and showrunner of The Penguin, Lauren LeFranc, discusses the possibility of a second season for this critically acclaimed spinoff of The Batman. Although initially planned as a limited series, LeFranc is open to the idea of another season if the creative team can find an engaging storyline to pursue. She’s currently brainstorming potential narratives while work advances on other projects in the wider The Batman universe.
Regarding Colin Farrell’s involvement in The Penguin Season 2, LeFranc mentioned that it largely depends on whether they can create a story that surpasses their previous work. He also emphasized the significance of Farrell’s availability and is currently considering what might follow if there are more seasons.
The Penguin garnered extensive praise from critics, with both Farrell and Cristin Milioti receiving multiple award wins and nominations. This high level of success has sparked curiosity among fans as to whether HBO will produce a second season, particularly since the release of DC’s Sgt. Rock, which originally featured Farrell in the lead role, was postponed. This delay might create an opportunity for Farrell to dedicate more time to future seasons of The Penguin.
It seems like Season 2 of “The Penguin” isn’t coming up soon, much like what LeFranc and studio executives such as Warner Bros.’ Channing Dungey have suggested. In April, Dungey admitted that there are currently no plans for a second season and emphasized that “The Penguin” was initially designed as a limited series. This is also reflected in the show’s Emmy campaign, where it was submitted under Outstanding Limited Series, suggesting that HBO does not have plans to produce another season.
It’s hopeful that LeFranc hasn’t ruled out a second season for Penguin entirely. As a skillful creator, she remains open to all potential projects. The key issue lies in whether or not an appropriate storyline for a second season emerges. The Penguin serves as a connecting piece between the initial two films of Matt Reeves’ Batman Crime Epic Saga. It appears that Farrell will reprise his role in The Batman Part II, set to release in 2027. Any narrative for a potential Penguin Season 2 is likely to be influenced by that film. Given that Reeves took time to complete the script for The Batman Part II, there may be adjustments along the way, so we’ll have to stay tuned to see how Oz Cobbe’s story unfolds on the big screen in a few years.
Since many fans adore “The Penguin”, it’s likely they’d feel let down if a second season didn’t materialize. But, it might be even more disheartening if “The Penguin” Season 2 was produced and failed to meet the exceptional quality of the first season. Unless LeFranc and her team can devise an engaging plot for “The Penguin”, it would be best for it to remain a standalone series. This way, its impact and status within the broader franchise could be preserved. At this moment, the main focus for everyone connected to the Batman Epic Crime Saga should be bringing “The Batman Part II” to the big screen.
