The Penguin Episode 3 Has a Weird DCEU Connection

As a fan who’s been following the Batman lore for decades, I must say that The Penguin has truly outdone itself with its third episode! The intricate web of connections to the DCEU is simply mind-blowing, and it’s fascinating to see how the same actor, Fran?ois Chau, has portrayed such a pivotal character in both Birds of Prey and now The Penguin.

In this weekend’s airing of “The Penguin,” its third installment, the tale surrounding Oz Cobblepot (Colin Farrell), Batman’s lore in Gotham City, was expanded in a crafty and unforeseen manner. Remarkably, the latest episode subtly linked back to the established DC Extended Universe continuity.

In episode 3 of “The Penguin,” we’re introduced to the head of the Tong crime family, played by Fran?ois Chau. Both Oz Cobb and Sofia Falcone (played by Cristin Milioti) are trying to win his favor with their latest street drug, Bliss. Interestingly, Chau had a similar role in a previous DC Extended Universe production, the 2020 film “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).” In that movie, he portrayed Mr. Keo, the leader of Gotham’s Chinese triad, who was trying to form an alliance with Roman Sionis / Black Mask (Ewan McGregor). However, when they clashed, Roman and his partner Victor Zsasz (Chris Messina) seized Keo and his family at the Gotham docks, then brutally disfigured them.

Will Batman Appear in The Penguin?

Prior to the premiere, showrunner Lauren LeFranc of “The Penguin” and director Matt Reeves of “The Batman” clarified that Robert Pattinson, playing both Bruce Wayne/Batman, won’t be making a guest appearance in the series.

LeFranc stated, ‘People might feel that a show or movie lacks impact without Batman, but I believe it offers a unique twist. The films of Matt provide a bird’s-eye view of the city, giving you a lofty perspective. On the other hand, Oz immerses us in the city streets, surrounded by grime and dirt, with characters striving to reach the top. This creates a different viewing experience. I think Gotham is intriguing enough to explore various aspects, and we should unlock more of its mysteries to provide a richer viewing experience.’

Reeves agreed, stating, “I don’t sense a lack of essential elements; instead, it feels like an expansion of what’s fundamentally present. We’re in the world of Batman, but we’re venturing down a new path. The presence of Batman, the Riddler, and all the events from the last film are still palpable. They shape this story. And that’s where our journey begins.
