As a long-time gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the narratives of crime dramas and mobster stories, I must say that The Penguin’s Finale has been one of the most gripping and emotionally charged episodes I’ve ever witnessed. It masterfully weaves together a tale of family, betrayal, and the dark underbelly of power, leaving me both stunned and intrigued.

View Urgent ForecastThe climactic episode of “The Penguin” series titled “A Great or Little Thing” saw the long-standing gang war between Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell) and Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti) reach a bloody conclusion. However, what was most shocking wasn’t just the mob-related violence but the emotional trauma inflicted upon the characters. In episode 8, Sofia manipulated situations to force Oz, Sofia, and Oz’s mother Franics Cobb (Deirdre O’Connell) into confrontation, leading to a long-suppressed family tension that eventually erupted. Furthermore, flashbacks in episodes 7 and 8 of “The Penguin” revealed some deeply troubling secrets hidden between the mother and son, ready to be unleashed at any moment.
WARNING: SPOILERS FOLLOW!
In the finale of “The Penguin,” we’re drawn back into the past, weeks following the departure of young Oz (played by Ryder Allen), who left his brothers Jack and Benny to perish in a flooded sewer tunnel after a heavy rainstorm. It’s revealed that Franchis discovers Oz’s deception – he was the one who trapped his brothers in the tunnel, intending to have her all to himself. Unable to bear the thought of ignoring Oz’s true evil nature, Franchis contacts local mobster Rex Calabrese (Louis Cancelmi) and devises a plan: a seemingly innocent mother-son date with Oz, followed by his elimination.
I, Francis, led Oz out to our town’s bustling nightclub, unbeknownst to him that this was his last supper. Rex, the menacing figure, waited in the shadows, ready to whisk him away in a deadly ride. But as Oz poured his heart out to his mom, praising her and vowing to give her the life she deserved, I found myself reconsidering Rex’s earlier advice. Instead of handing Oz over to Rex for training in the criminal underworld, I decided to keep him by my side, with Rex providing guidance on the gangster lifestyle. In the end, I dismissed Rex, choosing to keep Oz close as my trusted ally in this dangerous world.
Why The Penguin Finale’s Flashback Changes Everything
In the heat of Episode 8, I found myself pondering the mysteries left unanswered from The Penguin’s Episode 7 flashback: was Oz conscious when he took his brothers’ lives, and did Francis harbor any knowledge about it? Well, the writers certainly kept us on our toes as these questions, along with a heart-wrenching revelation of Francis’s feelings towards Oz that we never knew existed, were unveiled in this captivating flashback.
The consequences of the revelation don’t end there: when it was shown that Francis and Rex conspired to kill Oz, the show makes it clear that Oz’s life is a tragic irony – his most cherished emotional bond (his mother) and the role model for his criminal lifestyle (Rex Calabrese) were built on lies. These people didn’t genuinely care for him but instead saw an opportunity to manipulate him. Even the genius Penguin, despite being a mastermind, has been played since he was a child, adding a dark and ironic twist to the series’ opening scene where Oz kills Alberto Falcone, driven by his misguided admiration for Rex.
It’s also wonderfully complicated that the knot of blame between Oz being a monster by nature, and Francis being a mother who nutured that monster, is one that may never be fully untangled…
