As a fan who’s been following the twists and turns of Gotham City’s underworld for decades, I must say that “The Penguin” Episode 7 was a masterpiece! The introduction of Rex Calabrese (Louis Cancelmi) was long-awaited and did not disappoint.

The seventh episode of “The Penguin,” titled “Top Hat,” served as a pivotal penultimate chapter, skillfully blending reflections on Oz Cobb/Penguin’s (Colin Farrell) troubled past and escalating his ongoing conflict with Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti) in the present. Moreover, this episode also introduced a character who has significantly affected the series since its inception, yet we only encounter them physically for the first time now.

The Penguin Introduces Rex Calabrese

As a gamer, I’ve been captivated by the character “Rex Calabrese” throughout The Penguin series. This name popped up in the jaw-dropping opening scene and has been a constant point of reference for Oz Cobb. In my chats with Alberto Falcone (Michael Zegen) and Victor Aguilar (Rhenzy Feliz), it was clear that, to Oz, Rex was more than just a gangster—he was a neighborhood legend, a mob boss who showed kindness and affection towards local kids like myself.

WARNING: SPOILERS FOLLOW!

The story “Top Hat” opens with Oz’s mother, Francis Cobb (Emily Meade), performing accounting tasks for Rex Calabrese’s illicit operation. Francis sends her sons – Jack (Owen Asztalos), Benny (Nico Tirozzi), and Oz (Ryder Allen) – out to deliver the records to Rex; they encounter him bullying a storekeeper who owes money, openly on the street during daytime hours. Although Jack is wary of approaching the gangster, Oz is captivated by Rex and boldly calls out to him. However, Rex doesn’t recognize Oz, preferring his elder brother Jack, just as Francis does.

The intense desire for approval from his mother and substitute father figure ultimately leads young Oswald astray: following an encounter with Rex, a game of hide-and-seek with the Cobb boys ends disastrously; instead of staying with his siblings, Oz chooses to spend the night with his mom. As torrential rain pours down on Gotham, Oz turns a blind eye to the grave danger his brothers are in, effectively abandoning them and allowing them to drown.

The flashback scene serves to reveal the real depth of Oswald Cobb’s emotions. Throughout his life, Oz has built an intricate facade around himself; his mother serving as his moral guide, Rex Calabrese representing his ideal life, and his affection for his family are all elements of this self-crafted mask, concealing a web of lies and self-deception.

The Penguin: Who is Rex Calabrese?

The Penguin Finally Reveals a Pivotal Character Episode 7

In the world of DC comics set in the 2010s Batman Universe, Rex Calabrese was introduced as Selina Kyle/Catwoman’s biological father, known as “Rex ‘The Lion’ Calabrese” in the criminal underworld. He held dominion over this criminal realm until being deposed by Carmine Falcone, who took the nickname “the Roman.” After surviving a gang war, Calabrese went into hiding, using the pseudonym “Leo Leone,” before his capture and incarceration at Blackgate Penitentiary. From prison, he continued to exert influence over the underworld, eventually reaching out to Catwoman to reveal her family’s true history.

In the TV show “The Penguin,” Rex Calabrese is portrayed as a gangster who was active in Gotham’s Crown Point area during Oz Cobb’s upbringing. At present, it’s uncertain if this version of Calabrese from the Batman Universe has any connections to Catwoman. However, it’s been established that he has a past with Penguin’s family. Furthermore, many hints suggest that the way Penguin presents Rex is reminiscent of his comic book origins, where he was influential until Carmine Falcone gained prominence.

The Penguin airs on HBO and streams on Max.
