As a gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the dark and twisted worlds of Gotham City, I must say that The Penguin has been an absolute rollercoaster ride. The latest episode, Gold Summit, has left me utterly intrigued, particularly with the complex character development of Sofia Falcone, masterfully played by Cristin Milioti.

In the TV series The Penguin, we’ve witnessed the diverse paths to power taken by characters Oz and Sofia Falcone, who have an incredible knack for turning adversity into opportunity. Lately, the narrative has primarily revolved around Sofia (brilliantly portrayed by Cristin Milioti), although episode 6 of The Penguin delves deeper into this as well. Interestingly, we get a glimpse into another facet of Sofia’s life in the early part of the episode, thanks to a romantic subplot filled with unexpected turns. Be advised, spoilers for episode 6 of The Penguin, titled Gold Summit, are forthcoming if you haven’t watched it yet.

A Twisted Romance

At the beginning of the episode, focus shifts to Sofia’s house, where we find her engaged in a romantic situation with an unseen individual. However, this turns out to be a post-romantic encounter, as she faces the person and reveals it is her therapist, Dr. Julian Rush (portrayed by Theo Rossi). She then addresses him saying, “You’re at it again…you’re analyzing.

Approaching him, she finds him bound in a chair. His words are, “I’ve been admiring you.” To which she queries, “Are you injured?” As the camera draws nearer, it becomes evident that he bears shallow cuts on his shoulder and chest, suggesting they were caused by scratches. He then confesses, “I brought this upon myself.

As she departs, he queries, “Are you growing tired of me so soon?” To which she replies, “I have obligations.” He rises to depart and comments, “Once you locate Oz, don’t hesitate to make use of my knowledge.” Sofia chuckles before responding, “Dom will escort you out.” Then, she proceeds towards the kitchen where she encounters Salvatore Maroni (portrayed by Clancy Brown) for a discussion about that man named Oz.

The One Who Believed Her

Up until now, Sofia has experienced numerous betrayals, with a particularly significant instance occurring when she was confined within Arkham Asylum and abandoned there by Carmine Falcone. Given the influence the Falcone clan held, it seemed as though no one supported her cause. However, Julian stood out from the rest; he’s been steadfastly loyal to her ever since his release from Arkham.

Previously, their bond seemed to transform into something unusual, suggesting there was more than just a doctor-patient dynamic at play. Julian delved into her past struggles and encouraged her to confront them, leading to a change where she transitioned from frantically attempting to prove her innocence to assertively grabbing power, embracing an air of apprehension.

In the current situation, it’s evident that Sofia holds the upper hand in her dynamic with Julian, as statements like “are you bored with me already” reinforce this idea. The show doesn’t delve deeper into their relationship after this point in the episode, but it promises an intriguing journey ahead, exploring how Sofia and Julian respond to Oz’s presence in the future.

The Penguin Episode 6 is now streaming on Max.
