As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for superhero stories, I have to admit that The Penguin Episode 7 of Gotham Knights has left me utterly spellbound! This isn’t just another episode; it’s a game-changer that sends shockwaves through the Batman Universe.

In episode 7 of “The Penguin”, we witness a pivotal shift in perspective about Oswald “Oz” Cobb’s family background. The story begins with a glimpse into Oz’s childhood, residing in a Crown Point apartment with his mother and brothers. Yet, even the most dedicated fans of the “Batman” universe were taken aback by how deeply and darkly Oz’s tale unfolded, revealing that the infamous “Penguin” has been corrupted from the very core.

WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS!

In Episode 7 of The Penguin, the Flashback scene recounts the day when Oz and his siblings were sent out for fun by their mother who was doing accounting work for the mob. The responsibility fell on Jack to deliver the summary totals to local gangster Rex Calabrese (Louis Cancelmi). Later, the three Cobbs decided to enjoy a round of hide-and-seek in their favorite spot: the deserted subway and sewer passages.

Previous scenes at the Cobb residence subtly suggested that Oz felt like an outsider among his siblings due to his physical differences such as a limp and being overweight. Beyond this, however, it was evident that Oz harbored strong feelings of envy towards his mother’s affection – a sentiment that would later manifest into desires for wealth and power in adulthood. His jealousy became palpable whenever she showed favoritism to his brothers, and he seethed inside when they received her trust. These emotions reached a tipping point when Jack and Benny decided to slide down a ladder and conceal themselves in a flooded passageway; when Oz found it difficult to descend the ladder, he grew angry with his siblings, accusing them of humiliating him. In an attempt to retaliate, Oz sealed the tunnel door, effectively trapping his brothers inside.

The twist follows: After finding comfort in his mother’s undivided care, watching a movie and cuddling with her, Oz deceptively keeps his brothers away – he lies to his mother, claiming that Jack and Benny are off to watch Beetlejuice at the movies, all while plying her with alcohol. Meanwhile, the scene alternates between Oz’s joyful moments with his mom and Jack and Benny’s desperate pleas for help from within the tunnel, as rainwater floods the chamber, turning their cries into sounds of drowning, and then into silence. Remarkably, Oz remains unfazed by this situation; instead, he seems to find pleasure in watching a dance sequence featuring a hat-wearing character mimicking gunfire, which reinforces his romanticized view of the gangster lifestyle.

The Penguin: Why Oz Cobb Killing His Brothers Changes Everything

The Penguin Reveals the Dark Secret of Oz Cobb’s Family in Episode 7 Flashback

This flashback provides a new perspective on Oz Cobb’s character and beliefs. It is uncovered that his deepest emotional bond, which appeared to be love for his mother, was actually a profound psychological fixation. Furthermore, the tales he uses to influence others about his family and brothers serve as tools for emotional manipulation, but are in fact mere illusions. In essence, The Penguin’s character can be described as truly sociopathic, having always exhibited these traits.

In the penultimate episode of the series, “Top Hat” cleverly prompts us to reconsider who we thought was the main character. The emotional tension between Penguin and Sofia Falcone escalates drastically; with Sofia and Dr. Julian Rush now meddling in Francis Cobbs’ mental state, it seems that Oz’s bond with his mother is as much in danger as her life might be.

The Penguin airs new episodes Sunday nights on HBO and streams on Max.
